Change of Heart

For a female vocal

I’m buzzed on cheap Australian beer and melatonin
Propped against some ratty pillows watchin’ Conan
The guests are boring and the monologue was lousy
But I laugh because I’m half-drunk and feelin’ drowsy
And that TV is a spark of light

It glistens on the beer can that I’m holding onto
And I think of how good luck can often haunt you
How that car crash victim was a poor, unhappy loner
How doctors told me it’s a wonder she’s an organ donor
And how she pulled me from the dark of night

But there’s no such thing
As a brand new start
If a soul don’t bring
A change of heart

Though I’d already given up the pills and drinkin’
The procedure was expensive and my hope was shrinkin’
Then my boyfriend wound up doin’ time in Chino
When he tried to help me with a bank job up in Cupertino
While bombed on Thunderbird and Fentanyl

Medi-Cal came through and paid up for my operation
But my boyfriend was assaulted by the Aryan Nation
It took him four months to recover while in prison
He used that time to ponder death and One who’s risen
And the Good Lord stood beside him like a sentinel

But there’s no such thing
As a brand new start
If a soul don’t bring
A change of heart

Well, my boyfriend was released on good behavior
And he’s kept his promise to his God and Savior
He stopped by one day and asked what I was thinkin’
When he saw that I’d returned to powders, pills and drinkin’
As if there’s a monster stalking me

He learned carpentry his last few years in Chino
Now he’s got a wife and business somewhere up near Reno
Me, my eyes are tinted yellow and I’m guzzling Foster’s
Blind to how denial and drinking are imposters
Of a happy woman walking free

But there’s no such thing
As a brand new start
If a soul don’t bring
A change of heart
