Got one of my best friends his first royalty check!

Post by VanderBoegh » Mon Apr 30, 2018 4:48 pm

I've been at this for enough years now that most of my "first times" are long gone. However, I recently had the pleasure of having another one, in that I got one of my best friends his very first ASCAP royalty check.

From his text to me, it sounds like it amounted to about $122 or something like that, and is the result of one single piece of music. Took a few quarters for it to roll over the $100 threshold for getting a physical check. I think it's made him about $40 or so each quarter for the past 3 quarters.

Him and I did a few of these swampy guitar tracks a couple years ago. This one has been used on a few different shows ("Live Free or Die" on Nat Geo, and "King of the Road" on the History Channel). Not very high-paying stations, but it's also just one cue. Also, we went 50/50 on it, so the money amasses at a much slower rate when you only get 50%. BUT, it just goes to show you that if you have enough of these out there, the money WILL and DOES add up!!

As my friend also said in his text, "ASCAP just made the mail fun again". True dat!!

Reads like a great "pay-it-forward" success story to me, Professor Matt.
More evidence of the beauty of TAXI and its Community Forums/Family character.
WTG, my friend. WTG!!
And to your buddy, too.

Hey broski! Great story from an allaround great guy. Don't forget my first big royalty payment came from our song I'm The Greatest being used for the AFC Playoffs on CBS :D

Oh yeah! Totally spaced that! And now that you mention this, I also forgot that I helped on Terrell's first placement too with one of the first co-writes we did about 3 years ago.

See, I guess all of my "firsts" WERE already burned up! My damned memory ain't what it used to be.....

What a great thing to be able to share, and the track is awesome, too. I always leave these forums having learned something new and this is an excellent example of why that is so. Thanks for the terrific post!
