Hi !
I'm Mathieu Fiset, keyboardist / composer from Quebec City, Canada. New Taxi member since last month.
I'm a big Daft Punk fan and I love to use the vocoder in my songs or live. Sometimes I use it as "background" vocals or just as a cool effect or even for solos but my new thing is to use it as lead vocal, since there's no singer in my band and I'm just not a singer myself.
It's pretty tricky to use like that. My goal is to sound like Daft Punk's last album where the vocoder is really used as a lead vocal and it's expressive, clear to understand the lyrics and it sounds great, not just "cool". Exemple : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajGKWk0auOc
So I'd like to know if other members here are using the vocoder and how do you use it ? Can you make it sound like that exemple ? What vocoder do you use ? I use the MicroKorg XL but my vocoder sound is pretty much custom made, not a preset.
Also, for a Taxi listing requesting male vocals, do you think a vocoder lead vocal would work ?? (depends on what kind of listing I know)
Thanks,
Mathieu

Re: Using vocoder as lead vocal
i dont have much experience with vocoders. i’ve only used vocal synth once on a track because i didnt have a talk box at the time and i needed that roger troutman sound.
for a male lead vocal listing, it would have to specify that they’re looking for a vocoder lead vocal in that style for a submission with it to be on target. sometimes there are open call type listings where almost anything goes, those would be worth submitting a a track with a vocoder vocal lead too.
hope that helps.

This isn't exactly a vocoder, actually more versatile. I think the parameters are probably automatable, and also you can tune to scale.
