Submit with solo or without for perc instrumental request?

Post by TFarrell » Mon Jun 11, 2018 7:33 pm

I have created this track with a "timbale" solo that starts around 0:35. Afterwards I started 2nd guessing whether it was too much for this listing. Please listen and give your feedback. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Listing...
PERCUSSION-BASED INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS for TV COMMERCIALS and TRAILERS CUES are needed by a successful, globally distributed Music Library that has a great track record of cool placements in Films, TV shows, and TV Commercials. They’re looking for Percussion-based Cues that can range from quirky and mischievous, to playful, sneaky, or quizzical sounding. Please listen to the following references to get in the stylistic wheelhouse of what they’re looking for:

Activia Percussion Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3ufOOkbR_8

Boulevard Brewing TV Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNlfYcn-BS4

Quicksilver TV Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70y-TIubx7o

Please submit rhythmically engaging pieces that are primarily driven by percussive elements, including (but not limited to) Stomps, Kicks, Claps, Slaps, Snaps, Taps, and Bangs. You can send them World/Ethnic percussion pieces, Marching/Drumline pieces, Mechanical/Industrial-sounding pieces, pieces that are created using pots, pans, forks, and knives, or organic, woodsy-sounding pieces with drums, gourds, hollowed out logs, etc. Use your imagination and send them Percussive Instrumentals that really punch through and feel like they’d have a lot of impact in a TV commercial (or possibly in a Film Trailer.)

Be careful to stick to just one emotion and pattern throughout your piece. Don’t compose different “scenes.” Possible emotions, feelings, and vibes: Uplifting, energetic, action-oriented, tension-based, foreboding, etc. Different types of Tracks for different applications!

Note: You can include minimal instrumentation or you can send Tracks that ONLY have percussion. If you add instruments, please remember that more is less! Resist the urge to throw in the kitchen sink!!

TAXI Tip: If you’re thinking of using Virtual Instruments or samples, we’d suggest adding some real, organic sounds (drums, percussion, etc.) for requests like this. That can often be the thing that makes your music stand out from the rest!

All submissions should be about 2:00 minutes in length (give or take) with Non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings. Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, texture and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal. You’ll split any upfront sync fees 50/50. They’ll get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll get 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control 100% of your Master and Copyright. Since this is an EXCLUSIVE deal, please be sure the material you submit for this pitch is NOT already signed with any other Libraries or Catalogs. Please submit as many Instrumentals as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Saturday, June 16th, 2018. TAXI #Y180616PI

Tarence,

My two cents is that the timbale is no more busy then the jazz drum solo in the "Boulevard" example, so it is probably OK. Of course, the "Activia" example is much simpler. So it depends on which target you are trying to hit. Sounds cool to me, and seems to be within range of at least one of the targets.

good luck,

Vince

Really nice track! It's always tough to know what to submit when the references are just 30 seconds long. :) I think the timbales sound awesome, in fact I wouldn't mind hearing them just a little more forward in the mix.

One thing I would change with this track is to add some hard stops on the downbeat. There aren't really any edit points for an editor to cut in and out easily. Add them where it makes musical sense, like that the end of 16 bars. You can do a hard stop on the one, then add a fill on the last triplet. This sounds like 9/8, or maybe 9/4 (4+5) ?

Great music!

Thanks Vince & Paulie for your feedback. Looks like I'm going to go with the timbale solo. Great catch Paulie about the edit points I normally do that but got so into this track it slipped my mind. Thanks again both of you for your feedback.
