Submitting instrumental versions of released songs to exclusive listings

Post by Coffeeinthesink » Sun Jul 08, 2018 9:26 am

I have some songs that have been released online that I would like to re-mix, shorten, and submit to listings. If the library is offering and exclusive deal, would this cause a problem for them? Or do you think they might take it on a case by case basis? I would be up front with the fact that vocal versions are out there on the web should the library get in touch with me. Thanks!

Yes, an instrumental backing from a released song might have issues as you can't really separate it from the whole song. It would depend on the individual deal though, as some exclusive deals would be ok with a self-release as long as the entire song or any part of the song isn't signed anywhere else.

I agree with Vikki, I think most libraries would have problems with this, unless they have some unusual niche business. So it's probably not worth your time, versus other projects.

Maybe you could use the underlying tracks as a starting point and create new original works.

Good luck, Jim
