Rarity of Fortune ©2018 Robert George BMI

We were scuba diving somewhere off the southern coast
I could see right through her swimsuit as if she wore Blackbeard’s ghost
My underwater light was an ethereal harpoon
And it stabbed a sunken galleon full of gold dubloons

Then the distant song of dolphins seemed to hit a sour note
As we hauled that gold aboard my rusty power boat

O the rarity of fortune
Makes tomorrow hard to see
And the rarity of fortune
Renders love a mystery

I reached across the bed for her when I awoke at dawn
But my love, the treasure and my leaky boat were all gone
In a salty, azure field befitting Neptune’s plow
Luck had sown a golden crop that she was reaping now

She’d betrayed my tender love and did it splendidly
Leaving me to wonder why her breasts and kiss befriended me

O the rarity of fortune
Makes tomorrow hard to see
And the rarity of fortune
Renders love a mystery

O I could see her sailing free
Wild among the sharks and reefs and abalone
Where long ago the moon and sea
Had been married in a secret ceremony

So I’d walk the shoreline under dull, world-weary stars
Drinking home-distilled regret from dusty canning jars
One day I was wakened by the high tide in a gumbo mist
And she met me with a sailboat and a breathless kiss

Ev’ry hungry poet knows that reason is no friend of rhyme
And that fortune is to love what fate is to the end of time

O the rarity of fortune
Makes tomorrow hard to see
And the rarity of fortune
Renders love a mystery

Yes, the rarity of fortune
Renders love a mystery…
