Hey guys and gals,
Is anyone still using stand alone DAW’s ? I’m a dinosaur with limited tech ability and my top recording gear is a Yamaha AW4416.
Yea I know it’s ancient but I’m still learning . I’m pretty confident that I’ve got the basics but compared to what’s out there I realize that I’m behind the times a little bit. Any input would be appreciated. I’m new to the forum but not new to taxi.

My Casio PX3 and Korg X5 have sequencers, so they're technically workstations, but I don't use them that way.

Congratulations on what you've accomplished, thus far. Any technology is only as good as one's ability to use it. If you will look on Taxi TV for episodes with Richard Dance aka Crawdaddy, you'll find someone that has experienced significant success using a system not much different than yours.

That being said, there are some advantages to having a computer based system. Having a computer screen for editing purposes is a great perk. Being able to access the VST universe of plugins and easily integrate loops into a production is also great.

I'm old (63). I came up in the analog era i.e everything from Portastudios to 24 track 30 ips. I love outboard gear, knobs and faders. I love sessions with live musicians. It feels natural to me.

The new technology has changed scope of genres and manner in which I work. Personally I don't miss cutting into a 2" tape to edit. Michael could probably do a masterclass on that subject. Loop technology has allowed me to work with world class drummers recorded in world class studios. Sample libraries have provided access to full Orchestras, choirs, etc.

In the end, your music will most likely dictate which path to take. Best wishes on your music and technology journey.

I remember not so fondly synching my Brother PDC100 to my Tascam 4 track with FSK and a sync-box, a godawful lot of button mashing and a screen 16 characters wide by 5 high. Never looked back once I got the DAW and flatscreen, but I'm starting to get into sequencing loops for live performance. Bought a Jam Man Solo XT, so as to have the best of both worlds, compact and handy (er, footy) for the gig.

I have considered prepping for war, and get something analog that would work just in case. But then again, Id probably be busy with other things then. So naarh..
