Applying the stuff I learned at the Rally = a Forward

Post by jazzstan » Fri Nov 09, 2018 3:02 pm

From Laurel Ostrander at the opening session: 1) Be deliberate with my edit points; 2) Keep it simple, but use contrast; 3) The sting, the sting, the sting. And build up to it. From the session with Matt, Keith, Marcus, Terrell, and Randon: to be more focused on my productivity.

So after the Rally, I wrote a cue for a "LIGHT TENSION" dispatch listing. After doing my first pass at the various parts and elements, I went back through and added clear edit points where it made sense to do so. I mixed and matched (and pulled back parts) for contrast and layers. And I made sure to have a rise towards a sting ending. I set an ideal goal of 4 hours, but it took me 6 hours, which is still progress for me being more deliberate and focused.

Thanks for sharing those points from the rally. This particular track does have all those points: edit points, contrast, and building to "the sting". Congrats on the forward!

It's where the music has a natural sounding spot where an editor could cut the cue. Imagine a TV show where they say "And the winner is...." then then tension music continues for 4 or 5 seconds and then silence just as they announce the name. You'd want a natural edit point to lead into the silence. Listen to my link for "Angstiety" at 0:29.

Well done Stan ... Nice Track and Title ... Laurel Ostrander was witty and informative and you have taken direction quite readily

Congrats & WTG - good post-rally report.

Likewise, I've spent a lot of time going back through many mp3s where I'd neglected - cause I hadn't learned how - to enter contact info in the metadata.
Not too much of an Old-Guy to learn - just at a slower pace than them young guys on the panel... those guys who are raising the bar & the roof!

Good onya, Stan.
