Middle Eastern music forward
Was very happy this got forwarded:
https://soundcloud.com/user-819745024/c ... e-wadi-rum
Did anyone else work on this listing?
I used the double harmonic scale, a major scale with a flat second and a flat seventh. In G the chords are G, Ab, Cm, Fm.
Fun to work with but no dominant chord! Hard to find a decisive ending and I couldn't find any chords from related keys to bounce around with. Also wasn't sure about how to structure it so I used improv bumpers to keep it going.
Since I didn't have any 'real' instruments I worked to layer my samples into a texture. In a way the arrangement borrowed from Dixieland.
The listing:
Please submit well-crafted Instrumentals that capture the true essence of the Middle East. The size of your ensemble can vary, from something small (it could even be a single flute if it's done really well and sounds super authentic) to a fuller arrangement. Your instrumentation should be similar to what’s typically heard in traditional Middle Eastern Music. Authenticity in your sounds, performances, and instruments are going to be very important for this pitch. Anything that sounds obviously MIDI-driven or synthetic won’t work. Your submissions can also have some simple, non-lyrical Vocal elements, but they're not necessary.
TAXI Tip: Overdubbing real instruments on top of your samples/virtual instruments is a great way to make your material sound more authentic, so go ahead and break out those Tablas!

mike,
That's a really cool track- certainly see why it was forwarded.. I am looking to expand my catalog into more world submissions, so while I didn't submit to this one, I'll be looking for briefs like this in the future..
Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks for listening.
I recommend doing music like this, the 'rules' are different so its extra fun & challenging.

Hi Mike.
First - congrats on the forward.
I'm not really acquainted with the whole 'world music' scene/genre - but hearing your composition and a brief view of your website homepage, sorta makes me understand your having listened to & commented on my Celtic cues.
At this writing, I'm your newest Old-Guy follower on Soundcloud.
Cheers.

Actually I have detected a thread--probably woven by the gypsies--between the music of India, the Middle East, Flamenco, and Celtic.
