Blues Rock with SIMPLE Lyrics ?

Post by DannyWeber » Sun Nov 25, 2018 4:54 pm

Simple and a little sloppy but does it fit the listing?

Too much Rock and not enough Blues?

Help wanted, please! Never done one of these with vocals, I’m usually an instrumental guy.

Thanks,

Dan

Lyrics are below the listing, although not much to them..

BLUES SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed by a very active British Music Library that’s adding a lot of new music to meet increased client demand.
They’re looking for contemporary Blues Songs in All-Tempos that you’d hear on playlists with acts like (but not limited to) Gary Clark Jr, Colin James, the White Stripes, etc., etc., etc.
Please listen to the following references to get yourself in the general ballpark of what they’re looking for:
“Bright Lights” by Gary Clark Jr.
“40 Light Years” by Colin James
"Ball and Biscuit" by the White Stripes
Please submit current-sounding, soulfully expressive Blues Songs that have tons of attitude and emotion. Your submissions should have an authentic and believable instrumental and vocal performance. Traditional Blues instrumentation, as well as somewhat stripped-down arrangements, could all work for this request as long as it's produced in a contemporary style. Your submissions can veer a bit into the Blues-Rock lane, but don’t go too far!
They didn’t specify any lyric themes; however, if you could imagine hearing your lyric fitting in with the references above, then you’re probably in the ballpark. Please avoid references to specific names, dates, times, places, brands, and profanity. Do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Genre-appropriate Broadcast Quality is needed.

Just comparing yours with the ref tracks - seems worth a $5 shot... but it's your cash.
The ref tracks have in common a very simple structure and repetitive 'riff' thing going on.
I don't know if that makes them 'contemporary', as much as they feel more 'timeless'... and could be old or new, and work.
My concerns might be the tempo & style is a bit quicker, more rock than the ref tracks - but not sure if that's a deal-breaker.
Not sure what a Screener might want/say regarding the vocal style/delivery; that could be a weak spot.
Just don't know whenever a listing like this has 'contemporary' in it, and the reference tracks might be from current artists - but does that make them 'current-sounding'?
My 4 cents.

Thank you, Peter!

You are so generous with your time, as always!

I know about the tempo (it may be faster than they want) but I was hoping they would appreciate, the DARK, ROUGH and kind of IN YOUR FACE feeling I was trying to create, despite the up-tempo feel?

BTW, There is a Netflix show that uses this kind of stuff all the time. I was hoping to write something along those lines! Just using that as a model.

Jack White seems to have the music for that show wrapped up though. I am working hard on my own stuff though!!

Great to hear you chime in Peter! I definitely appreciate it!!!

I think you are in the ballpark with your track. I would bring the ride down a little during the chorus...it's a little distracting. Your track is closer to White Stripes than the other references but I don't think it's too Blues Rock for the listing. It has a nice blues riff throughout.

Thanks, Jeff !!

I did a lot of re-mixing on this track since yesterday but I totally missed the cymbal.
Since you think it's not too Blues Rock, I may take a shot at the listing.

Thanks again,

Dan
