Middle Eastern or Indian?

Post by mikehamm123 » Sat Mar 23, 2019 12:18 pm

This listing requests Middle Eastern chill instrumentals, but the two references provided are Indian music.

I think I'll go with Middle Eastern and assume the written part more accurately reflects the library's request?

What say you?

-------

MIDDLE EASTERN-Style CHILL-OUT INSTRUMENTALS are needed by an International Music Library with worldwide distribution through Universal!
NOTE: This company has just started requesting music from TAXI members, so it's very unlikely that you’ve got any music in their catalog. This is a killer opportunity to get in a very busy Music Library's catalog!
They’re looking for Down-to-Mid-Tempo Instrumentals that would fit well on a playlist with the following references below:
“Maha Amba” by Mathieu & Florzinho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upqJ2ZD73po

The Best Indian Chillout (0:00 - 7:00) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z95bpAbL-E

Quoting the Music Library: “We strongly recommend that the members use the instruments, scales and compositional stylings of the Middle East! The more authentic to the region, the better.”
Although the references have vocals, please submit instrumentals only for this pitch.
Please send them well-crafted Instrumentals with an authentic Middle Eastern sound that falls within the generally laid-back vibe and style of the references above. Your production should have authentic-sounding Middle Eastern elements/instrumentation, with smooth, mellow grooves, and slick, grooving beats. As is often the case, simpler is better, and this request is all about establishing a chill, Middle Eastern mood.

Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Saturday, April 6th, 2019.  TAXI #Y190406CC

That is a very good question. I started on a track -Indian style. I wonder if someone could clarify this since it could mean the difference between a forward or a return!

I'll email them.

Just curious, what kind of scale/mode are you using?

I'm going to do one in melodic minor and one in the 'double harmonic scale'

Ok thanks for emailing them. I'm using Phrygian.

Cool.

Double harmonic is Phrygian with a major 3rd, lots of fun to play around with but no dominant chord!

the first example sounds Arab to me and the second link, first song or 0:00 -7:00 also sounds more Arab or Egyptian, or middle eastern, while other songs on the Indian (second example) sound more Indian overall imo.

It features a sitar, definitely an Indian instrument. ;)

Taxi responds:

Both of those styles would work for this music request. We got the references and description directly from the music company, but technically you are correct in separating the two styles.

So either Middle Eastern or South Asian (Indian) music would work for this request.

I’ve been listening to songs in this genre… and to my ear, a lot of them have western-style chord progressions but mostly sound ‘Asian’ because of the style of the singer and the instrumentation.

I’ve been trying out ‘exotic’ scales but they make my piece sound more cinematic or traditional, not ‘chill’.

Probably I will just do something in melodic minor with Eastern instruments.

Anyone else finding this one a little perplexing?
