QUESTION

Post by Got2compose » Mon Apr 01, 2019 11:28 am

Do Music Sups and or Music library's check to see if a track is registered before sending a contract? I've waited to see if I would hear back from several of my forwards before registering with BMI. Haven't heard back yet, still hopeful!

Hi Joe,

It is YOUR responsibility to register any tracks sent DIRECTLY to a music supervisor.
BUT
For the vast majority of LIBRARIES...they DO NOT want you to register your tracks...
They will do it.... and often times rename the track also.

However, I do know of 1 Taxi friendly non exclusive library that will check to see if you have registered any tracks they approve..... They will send you an email if you have not registered them ... saying they are checking the rights holder.

Hope that helps,
Tim

If they are registering our tracks and renaming them, that certainly classifies as a totally different registration, or am I mistaken?
Also, I heard that if one is affiliated with a different PRO than ASCAP/BMI, i.e, an European one, for example, then one needs to register one's track with one's PRO regardless. That would be my case, specifically, as I am affiliated with the STIM, the Swedish PRO

Hi Superkons,

Well...some libraries rename tracks...and some don't.

Also, many libraries put a prefix on your original track name.. usually their initials or some identifier like that.

But I never register any tracks unless they are going DIRECTLY to a show.
That way, if you sent it directly to a music supervisor...you would get the writer and the publisher share.... but I only do this if I know I am sending a track to a supervisor....because it is not necessary otherwise.

Tim,
thanks for confirming that again. I might have made a mistake in that respect, then, as I registered the tracks that have been forwarded with my PRO. I hope I can get them unregistered...

Cheers

Hey Superkons,

It would be easier if you just tell the library that accepts your tracks that you are changing the names before you send the tracks to them.
I have found that dealing with a PRO for any changes... can take weeks.

I have many identical tracks in different non-exclusive libraries with different names.

Hey Tim,
Renaming the tracks specifically for the libraries is a possibility I have been contemplating, as well.
How would that work with exclusive libraries, though?

My PRO usually gets back to me very quickly, however, now that I asked them whether it is possible to deregister certain works, they have gone silent

Cheers,
Marco

Hi Marco,

It is no problem at all with an exclusive library....

For example, if Taxi forwards a track called Happy Day to an exclusive library.....
and you already registered Happy Day with your PRO....

Just send a track called Happy Days to the exclusive library.... (just tell them you already registered Happy Day with your PRO)
That way they can register it under the name Happy Days.

In your PRO you will then have a track called Happy Day ...with you getting 100% of the writer share and 100% of the publisher share...
And a track called Happy Days (that the exclusive library will register) with you getting 100% of fhe writer share and the exclusive library getting 100% of the publisher share.

Tim,
Thanks a lot for giving a practical example, that was absolutely crystal clear, cheers.

Also, my PRO replied saying that registering tracks facilitates matching them, so I did well. I suppose I am all good, then! :)
