Yes/No question about the lyrics box in the listings

Post by HowlingUlf » Fri Apr 26, 2019 1:20 am

Q: Do the screeners ALWAYS see the lyrics as part of their screen GUI?

Some songs start one way and the majority of the song is vastly different.
Start out soft and then goes loud, starts with a bang and then it's a ballad, starts with half tempo then goes normal ... etc
Right now I don't have one of those songs so in this relaxed moment I think I could ask!
If I want to send a message to the screener that the song changes and he/she can make a jump to the "real" part of the song is that possible.

So that's the question:
Do the screeners ALWAYS see the lyrics as part of their screen GUI or if they get to use the same screen as the submitter do they ALWAYS check the lyrics box or is it up to them if they think they need to?

Was that convoluted and confusing? :?

Really very simple...
Almost all A&R people (including Screeners) can tell you within the first 3 seconds whether the Song/Cue/Instrumental is going to work for the listing provided.
If we as writers haven't hit the mark by then, we've not done our job.

Yes, I know!
A lot of amateur listeners, myself included, SOMETIMES do and SOMETIMES don't use maybe 5-10 seconds before cutting songs, depending on why they listen, in a list of songs maybe worth listening to, so if the pro listeners use 3 seconds it's OK.
Then again there are amateur listeners who have to hear a song 20 times all the way through before they actually realize they like it ... or don't like it!
That wasn't the question.

Q: Do the screeners ALWAYS see the lyrics as part of their screen GUI?
meaning are they required to read the little box, are they advised to read or can they do however they please?
meaning can I reach a screener with a oneliner of any sort, using good judgment to not shoot myself in the foot?

I am guessing only ML and the screeners would know that.

Pretty sure I've read somewhere that they are meant to listen all the way through to the track.

But like you said..no A&R folk are going to do that, so even if Taxi forwarded it you'd have to grab the next person down the chain in a few seconds anyway so why to disqualify yourself.

Interesting! Then it would kind of take care of itself. After listening it's either yes/no anyway so that's good enough! 8-)
