I'm Schizophrenic, and I Think it Really Helps My Songwriting

Post by Patrick » Fri May 10, 2019 6:38 pm

When I'm in psychosis, I connect random dots and create a synchronicity to it all. I've been diagnosed with delusions of reference, and delusions of persecution.

I think a man hits his peak creatively in his 20's, and then again in his 50's. I think studies will back me up on this. I just feel 'in the zone' these days. (I'm 53 years old) I'll be recording some stuff in the near future, and share it with all of you in the Peer to Peer section down the road.

Take care,

Patrick

I can second the idea that a mental disorder can actually be helpful creatively sometimes. I have ADHD and that allows me a lot of out of the box thinking that helps with musical ideas. Or at least that's what I tell myself to make my suffering feel "worth it" lol.

That said, I'm still working on my mental health a lot and had to overcome the delusion that being disorganized was helping me creatively. I also had to realize that my daily marijuana habit, despite giving me a lot of ideas, was severely limiting me and stunting my learning.

And you don't ever have to stop "peaking" creatively! If you ever run out of ideas, you just haven't learned enough yet! Find more new ideas and skills to explore in order to keep everything exciting and magical!

When I was psychotic, and at my very depths...feeling the whole world wanted me dead...I scribbled down this schizophrenic note to myself...

"Everyone is born with a gift, and there would be one less colour in the Rainbow without you."

So instead of hanging myself, I figured I'd hang around for a bit and see if I could make the B Side of a 45 someday. ;)

I really think you should use that last line " Everyone is born with a gift and there would be one less colour in the Rainbow without you " as an idea for a song. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not quite sure, but I believe Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong.

I take Abilify injections every 3 weeks which keeps me sane. I don't think I'm delusional when I say my affliction has aided my songwriting. Music is all about connecting dots and patterns...creating order...marrying that lyric to the melody. I wrote down many self-quotes while fluidly psychotic.

My quote on Fatherhood?...... "Long days. Fast years."

My daughters will be 15 years old next month. They're my biggest fans! :D

(Hmmm..."Long days. Fast years"...sounds like the title of a little country song doesn't it?) ;)

I'm beginning to wonder if it's all an illusion and you have to be delusional to make sense of anything
