is this Trap? or Hip-hop?

Post by jaywilliams » Thu May 16, 2019 12:19 pm

hey guys, was working on a "thoughtful, reflective, introspective" electronica track yesterday and came up with this.
I think its off the mark for the listing, but I like the resulting track, so please help!

Does this sound like a Trap cue, or Hip-hop, or what?

What kind of emotion is it evoking?

I've got it tagged as Trap for now but I have a feeling it's more of a hip-hop cue.

Thank you!

Jay :)

Hey Jay that's one hell of a hip hop riff to my ears! You got to use that for something. Don't think it's trap though - but can't hear the kick as listening on my laptop.

Do you think the two contrasting melodic sections are what make it difficult to categorise - they're almost pulling in different directions?

Nice work!

Chris

Chris hey thanks for the compliment and for checking out the track.

I have a difficult time slotting my tracks into genres, sometimes, for whatever reason.

This one I figured was somewhere on the hip hop, trap, or EDM spectrum, based on your feedback and my initial hunch I'll call it hip-hop.

Now I just have to find the listing that will fit!

Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Hi Jay,

at the moment, I would say it is no trap YET, but I think it could/should be trap!
Just put much more hihats in and, of course, subbass. I don't think it should be
too difficult to turn this into a killer trap track! :)

So, the other day Matt said about one of my tracks that it was "Freddy Kruger meets trap". I don't think it was meant to be a complement, so I don't
want to say that about yours, but there somehow is a pretty cool "monsterness" about it. :)

Tom
Thanks Tom -

I appreciate your comments and your taking the time to listen.

I think I'll need to do a bit more studying before I come up with a proper Trap song, but I have hip-hop in my veins so yeah I'll let this one be what it is and go write some more.

Don't worry about the monster, its just the fly trap looking for food!

:D

Hi Jay,
Nice work. I can't help with the genre but it definitely moves me.
I see a smoke filled underground club full of victims of mind altering substances. A dangerous place to be.
Or looking out through the eyes of someone in a semiconcious state. Punch drunk.

My tuppence worth.

Hey Jay,

Thanks for posting. Fun Track! It was education/insightful to listen, and then read the comments. I'm in the same boat= difficulty identifying genre/sub-genre. Musical genres are like bacteria in a petri dish, constantly dividing, and subdividing. Everytime you look in the microscope, you find that something new has spawned over night!

This has the potential to be a dub trap cue. The synth is too forward in the mix, or the hats, kick and snares need to come forward. Trap is all about the big kick, the busy hihats and a crisp snare. Hit YouTube and search for Dub Trap to see what I'm talking about. Fun track! :)
