BMI Royalty Statement

Post by SteveBaruah » Sat Jun 22, 2019 12:28 am

Hi All!

I got my second BMI royalty statement yesterday. Several great placements including my first network placements on ABC and Fox which I didn't know about until now.
I feel like the cogs are turning! 250 cues signed to libraries and 3 years into the 5 year plan.

I had a royalty statement question for the more experienced members; on my ABC and Fox placements under 'Count' there are figures which are several hundred! Has that placement really aired several hundred times in that quarter?!
Could it be a promo or something? Or have I just understood it incorrectly. If they really did air that much, each 'airing' would have earned me about 30 cents.

Thanks!
Steve

So cool, Steve! Congratulations!

Sounds like you’ve got a solid plan in place, have been following through with it, and it’s paying off.

Way to go! :)

Hey Steve,

Yes 'count is how many times the track played on that airing of the TV show.
BUT...'count' under the Internet portion of BMI statement is how many times it was played on an internet service..... Hulu, Netflix, Youtube...etc.

So for instance... I have a track played 4 times on a TV show....
And at the bottom of the statement the track was streamed 25,278 times.

My 4 cents worth,
Tim

Thanks, Andrew!
Tim, yes, that's how I thought it worked, too. I also have internet streams of placements. I just thought it can't be right that ABC aired the same episode 200 times in one quarter. Thanks for your comments.

Congrats man that’s awesome!!

My guess would be that it’s a promo, who knows though. Does it list a specific show or anything?

Thanks, Mark!

Yeah, I got two of them. I can only guess they are promos, but I thought the payment per airing would be higher for network TV.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah I'm with you on that one - would be interested in hearing some more veteran members weigh in. I always thought network tv paid substantially more, everyone always talks about getting music on the big 4 (abc, fox, nbc, and cbs I think) and how well those placements can pay.

I would be surprised if those weren't promos after looking at my own statement. Everyone always talks about how much the Kardashians reruns, to my understanding it reruns more than most shows. To put things in perspective - I had a handful of episodes on my royalty statement and the highest count was 29.. and if that's a lot, well 195 is pretty insane for an episode.

Congrats Steve! Well done!

The count number always threw me off on the statements as well, so I'm not quite sure how to articulate that. Hopefully someone else can help though.

Yes...to reiterate,

The 'count' is how many times that particular piece of music played in that particular show.
Count of 10 means.... 10 time in that 1 show.

BUT, at the bottom under Internet Audio Visual....'count' is how many times it was streamed over the internet to Hulu, Amazon, Youtube, etc.

My 10 cents worth,
Tim

Really need to be getting prime time airing for the big bucks!

Congrats indeed tho.
