Question? 9/16/2019 Episode - Craig Pilo

Post by jdstamper » Fri Sep 20, 2019 2:25 pm

I wasn't able to see it live but watched it from the archives, and very much enjoyed this episode with Craig Pilo (hope I'm spelling that right)

This time the archive didn't replay the live chat, probably due to editing out the false start.

So I have a question about something Craig said. On a couple of tracks played, he commented that it could have used more "comping" ... and I'm not sure what that means in this context. Comping to me means creating composite audio from different takes of the same passage, but I don't know if that's what Craig was saying in the episode. Can anyone clarify?

In any case, many thanks to Craig, Michael and crew for another insightful episode. I hope Craig will be back again soon, as well as other Taxi screeners.

Thanks, Jim

hey Jim I must have missed that part there was so much information to absorb.

That is the only definition of comping that I am aware of, at least in regards to music production. I have most often heard the phrase and concept in relation to vocal arrangements, strange that it should come up on an episode dedicated to instrumental cues.

I was confused by the use of "comping" in this context as well. Perhaps he meant applying compression?
