multiple submissions for one listing?

Post by TheGillwoman » Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:12 pm

Hi everybody,

I'm about to finish up my first year as a Taxi member and have a question about how many tracks to submit per listing. If you happen to have, say, 4 tunes that you think fit a particular description, do you submit all of them? ...or just one and then hope that if it's forwarded it will lead to a request for more tracks like it?

I'd say my forward rate is about 30%. I've been experimenting this year, throwing stuff against the wall to see what will stick... those $5 's do add up!

Thanks a lot for any input!

Jane

I usually submit only one, unless I really think I can perhaps throw in one more.
Main reason for submitting only one is, as you pointed out, the 5 bucks adding up :P

The listing usual says up to 3 submissions per listing I believe. Unless I feel super strongly about #2 and 3, I leave it at one for now and hope #1 might get me into the door. :)

For me, it depends on both the nature of the listing, what I have, and how confident I feel about one or more songs for the listing. If it is a songs listing (which most of the ones I submit to are at this point), especially of the pitch for an artist type, if I have multiple songs I think would be a good fit, I'll probably submit multiple songs. The reason is that I can't really predict the reviewer's tastes. I might think one song is way better for the listing than another, while a second song is good, but not as good. But the reviewer might have exactly the opposite impressions. Thus, if I only submitted the one, it might get rejected, while the reviewer might have forwarded the one I decided not to submit. But, also, say both were strong enough in the reviewer's mind, whoever is getting the forwarded songs could also have different tastes, and maybe they're looking for more than one song anyway. So, if I've gotten more forwarded, maybe my chances got doubled. (That last part also comes from experience in getting indie cuts in the past, where it was often songs I wouldn't have even submitted for the artist in question had I only been able to submit one or two songs that were the ones the artist ended up cutting.)

Another case I've submitted multiple songs for is when I'm experimenting with something new and trying to figure out how things stack up. This is more likely a case with instrumental cues (since I'm super new to trying to do those). The first time I was in TAXI (about a decade ago for a year), one of the opportunities was for meditation music (or maybe it was massage music). I had one song I'd written I thought could work if recorded appropriately, and I wrote another piece for the listing. I submitted both, and both got forwarded. (No placements arose, unfortunately.)

Most of the time, though, if I'm writing specifically for an opportunity, odds are I'll only do one submission if for no reason other than I'm generally not fast enough on the production front to get more than one done by the deadline (and occasionally not even fast enough to get one done).

Thanks, Rick.

I'm creating mostly instrumental cues right now. It seems to me that as I go along and learn to match the listing examples better, the less submissions I'm making per listing. Hoping I get to the point of making one good new one each time without always submitting older ones as a backup.

In truth, many people have had "oldies" forwarded, and placed, so it is worth doing that :)

Wow Marco, you're right! All 4 that I submitted were picked up by the library....all those 5 bucks paid off in the long run. This sure is an interesting game to figure out.
