First Attempt with Trap Cues

Post by Horacemix » Mon Mar 23, 2020 8:13 am

Hello Everybody:

I've composed this cue to give a try to "EMOTIONAL TRAP (EMO-TRAP) INSTRUMENTAL CUES". Named Trapped at home, and I'm thinking to add to the title "(fucking covid)". :D
https://soundcloud.com/horacemix/horace ... eUPvKKeHS9

I'd like to know what mistakes I'm making with this one. The references given in the listing seem to be more or less repetitive but the description gives the tip: "Stick to a central motif throughout, and give your Cues a developmental arc that gives the editors some options!" So I have the feeling that I have a not too repetitive cue, and I'm afraid of over-doing it. I think I got enough editing points, so what should I correct to increase my chances with this "pitch"?
Thanks in advance for sharing your invaluable knowledge!

Regards
Lots of EMOTIONAL TRAP (EMO-TRAP) INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a new division of a Music Licensing Company that gets tons of placements in TV Shows and is now expanding!

NOTE: They’re currently building a few new catalogs, so this is a killer opportunity to start a relationship with an awesome company!

They're looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumental Cues in the general stylistic wheelhouse of the following references:

“Lucid Dreams (Instrumental)” by Juice WRLD

“SAD! (Instrumental)” by XXXTENTACION

“Betrayed (Instrumental)” by Lil Xan

Give them well-crafted Trap Instrumental Cues that effectively deliver a sad and/or melancholy mood and feel. Your submissions should be rhythmically engaging from start to finish and have contemporary Trap elements.

Stick to a central motif throughout, and give your Cues a developmental arc that gives the editors some options!

Hint: That will increase your chances of getting your Cues used more often!

TAXI Tip: Please be sure your virtual instruments and samples sound current (not dated), and are of high quality!

All submissions should be around 90 seconds to 2 minutes in length (give or take). Non-faded, Buttoned/Stinger endings will work best. Please do NOT copy the referenced material in any way, shape or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and overall vibe. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of other artists’ music, sounds or any form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal. You’ll split any upfront sync fees 50/50. They’ll get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll get 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control 100% of your Master and Copyright. Since this is an EXCLUSIVE deal, please be sure the material you submit for this pitch is NOT already signed with other Libraries or Catalogs.

Please submit as many Instrumental Cues as you'd like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by a TAXI Screener who also works for the Licensing Company! Sweet - you'll get heard by one of the "deciders." Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Wednesday, April 15th, 2020. TAXI # S200415ET

I like it, very moody and melancholic. Have you tried playing around with the tempo at all? Moving it up another 5-10 bpm could make it sound a little more trap-py perhaps. Could be an interesting experiment.

Hi! Thank you for your comment!
Regarding your question, no, I didn't try to play around with the tempo. I choose that BPM just because of one of the references is in that BPM. (The one with the Sting's The Shape of my heart progression https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1vpfvh3JJ4)

But I'm going to try to speed up a little bit, to see what happens! Probably I'll bother you asking for your review! :D

Hi Horace

I dig this track! With the fact in mind, that I have only a couple of trapish forwards, here is what I think:
Percussion overall needs to be much louder in the mix. In particular the hihats and the snare. I think the
track could also use a sustained subbass in places. Not much trap without a subbass.

Keep it up!

Tom
Hey Tom!
Great advice! Thank you!
More percussion and hi-hat plus sub bass (I intended to do it with the current bass sound but I think I should learn more about subbasses sounds!)

Hi! Finally, I've made a few changes for this one.
https://soundcloud.com/horacemix/horace ... gpUNGciDT4

I've changed the snare. Increased the drums and hi-hat, used sub-bass and change the overall master.

I hope I didn't ruin the thing!

Thanks in advance for reviewing and commenting!
