Hi everyone, I'm a pre-newbie trying to get properly setup before I join Taxi. My question is, for cue creation what would be more useful, brass or strings? I'd like to buy both but my budget says pick one. I'm looking at the Eastwest Hollywood brass or strings collection. Thanks!

Depends highly on the music. I would advice to buy when you have an actual need for it, and not just based on imagination. Buying thise things can be a bottomless pithole, so make sure you are certain it is something you absolutely need.

Ideally, you'll need both. I'm a horn player, so I bought brass first, cuz it's what I understand. I write blues, soul, and R&B, so pop brass was the first thing I got, but you hear strings on Motown and Nashville records, so that's gotta be an essential part of the kit, too. Ensemble/chamber strings are a good place to start, so you don't have to dive into massive orchestrations, right away.
