Well known Library taking part of writers share...

Post by JohnnyP » Fri Aug 14, 2020 12:57 pm

So I’ve gotten this from a very reliable source who has taught at the R Rally for years.

A particular music library is floating that they are wanting to take 50% of the writers share of songs signed to them. This is supposedly to make up for production companies taking a portion of this library’s publisher’s share.

I’m not going to out my friend but this is obviously a very bad precedent. I know Discovery Channel had an issue earlier this year with not paying royalties (which I believe was resolved in our favor) and now this....
This is a company that many of my TAXI friends have music in. Keep an eye on any new contracts you sign.

I don't know the library but this has to be lurching aggresively over the line rather than crossing it.

I would just move the library to the graveyard folder

Well said. One more example of cheapening the value of music and creativity

I have had close friends question me on what and who I am music wise since I got into the sync world.

So libraries acting like this don't help that equation !

Seriously - flip the finger at any outfit that does this.

I’ve heard rumors at the PMC about this being on the horizon but hadn't heard first hand til this week. Once one gets away with it and finds it profitable this will snowball.

Sounds like a good way to slowly decline in quality...
