With mics, it also depends what you're recording. For instance, are you buying a mic specifically for your voice? If so, consider booking time in a recording studio that has all the mics you're interested in, and overdub vocals on one or more of your tracks with each mic. Then go home and listen. And maybe post here and ask your TAXI friends to listen. It's possible that a cheaper mic could work better, or at least just as well, for your voice. Same for instruments, if you're going to be regularly recording a particular set of instruments.

On a similar topic, is this JBL 3MK II the set you were mentioning, Peter? I found them on sale on Amazon, but I'm always hesitant to spend a lot of money, even when it is a fairly good sale... Image
Thanks.

Thanks.

I think that is the newer version of the 305... also the 305p....
I just watched this review, and have ordered for myself the ISO-acoustic 155 stands - since I only have desktop space.

Hope this is helpful.

Very helpful video, thanks, Peter! Of course, now I want the expensive ones.  I guess I'll continue to look around and see what I can fit into my budget. I appreciate your help!

Good luck, Merry - on meeting your need within your budget. I don't have competent knowledge to recommend that you consider 'used gear' - but I have seen some pro-audio suppliers offering
'returned' gear, for re-sale, at significantly reduced prices. Buying used electronic could be risky - but I also know folks who've saved tons buying gear from reputable studios or suppliers who recycle trade-in/trade-up gear to their customers. You might find a bargain, if you're diligent. Maybe even call and speak to a Sweetwater rep, to see what they can offer.

Cheers.
Be kind to your ears!!

Thanks! I may be able to find something reasonable that will work in the meantime. I know the guys at Sweetwater are great. I was just hoping to be able to use Amazon because friends sent me some gift cards as a get-well present. :) Still, I'm usually leery of buying electronics online... Dilemma. Maybe I'll see if Best Buy or Walmart has anything... :D You know, just in the interim.

....and back to microphones, I stumbled across this today. Its a refreshing view, especially for those of us who won't be dropping a few $k on a mic any time soon.

I like the rhetorical comments at about the 5 minute mark:
"I spent the extra 3 grand after messing with the budget microphone...and this one isn't really doing what I thought it would do"
Another upvote for 'it isn't the gear, it's the ear'
