I know I am not the first to point out that the enormous cost in getting a metal box onto Mars really could have been put to better use.

From a sound engineering perspective the noise reduction is impressive.
My guess is the mic assembly has a self noise mic that can be subtracted.
Still impressed as can't hear many artifacts in the result - and the self noise is 10x or more than signal here.

All that way and all that technology, but do you think it'd have sounded better if they'd used a ribbon mic with a pop shield through a valve preamp?

Turns out the primary reason for a sound recording function is to monitor the sounds the rover internally and as it travels over terrain for engineering purposes.
So they didn't send it there to record the wind on Mars - that was just a bonus.
