Renaissance Harp Piece for Dispatch Listing

Post by Merryband1 » Fri Apr 02, 2021 11:36 am

After all the mic and recording woes I've been discussing in the Tech thread, here's the link to what I edited together last night. Does it sound all right? I already know about the sustain problem, but I don't know that it's fixable. I played to a click track to keep my unfortunate tendency to rush under control. :) Recorded with Gauge ECM-58, equivalent to the Shure 58.

Hi Merry,

Nice piece and nice playing and appreciate how hard of an instrument it is to play BUT it sounds like you recorded with the Guage mic, probably won't go back and record again but maybe with EQ and a bit of reverb you can bring the quality of the sound/recording up a little...maybe?

Good luck.

Thanks! That's just what I was wondering! :) I'll process it a little and see if I can bring up the sound quality!

Galliard with EQ & reverb

Post by Merryband1 » Fri Apr 02, 2021 2:27 pm

I rolled off 2 dB of treble, added 1 dB of midrange and 5 dB of bass, then set the reverb to "hall," 95.0 to 5.0 dry to wet.

WOW, Merry... like the music - but that's one instrument about which I know zilch, and dare not try to pretend to have advice on the capture aspects.
What I can offer as 'food-for-thought' - as it's an acoustic instrument, and a piece that fits into that 'era'... so, to keep it sounding 'real & authentic'
in its character (is that important?)...maybe it need not sound overly produced-perfect and pristine.

The 'live-play' nuances helps set the listener right there; IMHO... squeaks and all. :? 8-)
HTH; and good luck on the submit. It will be interesting to read the comments, either way it goes.
(just listened to the new/revised track - sounds good to me: "your mileage may vary".)

Hi Merry,
It’s a really nice piece with an authentic sound. Not sure of the brief, but if they’re looking for a real sounding period piece being played at a wedding or some gathering, then I think it’s perfect.

Merry, I love the piece ...
Here is what I would do production-wise ...
record with your dynamic mic and a large diaphragm condenser ...
The trick to layering tracks is to use mic's with varying characters ... it is like using other eyes to paint a picture!
after you have gotten a great performance recorded you can double one of the two tracks and send it left and its copy to the right while the third goes down the middle ...
A very slight delay can be added to any of the 3 tracks which will give some sense of space to the arrangement ...
EQ , Compression and an emulation of a Tube Pre-amp can also be exhilarating to experiment with ...
Have "Fun" with it ... you will be amazed at how thick and full it can sound ...

One more thing ... when you have gotten all of the technical things ready (mic placement and levels) ... Imagine an "Audience" ... or have a real one and hit record
