Daddy’s Last Dog
Teardrops are runnin' down my old shovel
As I stand near the hickory grove
I can't take the loss, See his head on his paws
As he napped by the old wood stove
Daddy found him -lost in the cow barn
Lickin' a milk pail dry
A barkin' young pup, I watched that rascal grow up
Now I'm standing and saying goodbye
To daddy's last dog-- daddy's last dog
He tracked bear n buck through mountain fog
Chewed dad’s shoes to shreds
While he drank 'shine and read
Some old sportsman's catalog
Time rarely takes more
My heart breaks for
Daddy's last dog
He'd come up to me durin' my snack time
And yap for a small treat or two
He'd feel my water gun, if he stole a monkey from
My animal cracker zoo
I still recall when Daddy passed on
It was so hard to accept
I drove out to the farm, found that dog by the barn
I fed him some cookies and wept
With daddy's last dog- daddy's last dog
He'd chase long-eared hares through hollow logs
Chewed dad’s shoes to shreds
While he drank 'shine and read
Some old Fishin ' catalog
Time rarely takes more
My heart breaks for
Daddy's last dog
I'll put a flagstone marker on this patch of clover
Hard to believe, that those days are over
Cos they're both gone and my dreams will darken
I just hope heaven don't mind the barkin'
Of daddy's last dog- daddy's last dog
He tracked bear n buck through mountain fog
Chewed dad’s shoes to shreds
While he drank 'shine and read
Some old sportsman's catalog
Time rarely takes more
My heart breaks for
Daddy's last dog
