Buttoned/Stinger ending does not include ringout, right?

Post by irthlingz » Tue Sep 14, 2021 1:11 pm

I know this question has been discussed before:

post410159.html

but ...

I was reading Steve Barden's Writing Production Music for TV, wherein he says,
"How long of a note could we have used? ... Depending on the tempo, it shouldn't linger over one or two seconds." (p. 67)
I just wanted to find out whether people think this "one or two seconds" includes the "ringout" that lingers after the note (or chord) is struck. For example, in our instrumental Easy Goin Folks, the ending (at around 3:12) is a strum which I guess could be thought of as a quarter or half note, which at 120bpm is half a second or a second, but the ringout probably lasts four seconds.

I had drawn the conclusion previously that it's not really about how long the note "lingers" (i.e. rings out) as long as it's a definitive ending that doesn't meander or fade out while riffing or repeating a whole musical phrase. But Steve Barden's use of the word "linger" got me wondering.

BTW, other comments on our piece are also welcome! (Dispatch listing copied below)

Thanks,

A Range of MODERN FOLK INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a very successful Music Publisher with a long track record of placements in Film, TV, and Commercials.

This Publisher is searching for quite a few Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that might fit on a playlist with the following references:

"Mountain Quail" by Dust Follows
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOdjLxKb8_k

"Home" by Phillip Phillips
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoRkntoHkIE

"Half Acre" by Hem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuGv8xR_tOs

"Home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHEOF_rcND8

Although the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals only for this request.

Please submit well-composed Folk Instrumentals with engaging rhythms, catchy motifs, top-notch musicianship, and a healthy dose of folksy charm. Instrumentation that's in the same general ballpark of the references and other artists like them will suit your submissions best – think acoustic guitars, handclaps, stomps, ukulele, etc. Please be sure that your production is high-quality, and any virtual instruments or samples you use sound like the real thing and not synthetic or stiff. We suggest sticking with one mood per Instrumental so they remain cohesive!

All submissions should be about 2 to 4 minutes in length, give or take, and have non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings. Do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for texture, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Quoting the Publisher: “Only artists/writers affiliated with ASCAP or BMI are eligible to submit their music for this opportunity.”

The specific deal points will be handled on a case-by-case basis. If you’re inclined to do an Exclusive deal, please don’t submit material that’s already signed with other libraries or publishers. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to submit to this opportunity. Please submit as many Instrumentals as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Monday, September 27th, 2021. TAXI Dispatch # D210927KO

Your ringout is just fine
Important to allow most endings like that to be/feel natural
Editors can always do a quicker fadeout when neccesary

A little too long is fine and better than too short as Cass said. The editor can fade out early if they want.
