Best BMI statement to date!
A big shout out to TAXI and Michael for opening up my eyes to the world of Film/TV composing!
I got my BMI quarterly on Friday and it was my largest ever, but most noticeable to me was nearly 1k of it was from our favorite library owner, panelist and direct conduit to Y&R! I would have never met her if it wasn't for TAXI. Folks who attend the Road Rally know who I mean
6 years of being a TAXI member and it took me a few years in to realize that utilizing all of the TAXI resources is key! Here are a few examples.
1) I've used "Peer to Peer" in this Forum to bounce rough mixes off my TAXI friends. I've received great input from my peers. This has caused me to redo guitar parts, swap V1 for V2, edit down a bridge.. all keys to honing a song from good to something better that actually gets signed and placed.
2) I've checked out the "Forwards Blog" to see who made the cut when I didn't. Yes I admit it ticks me off when I get a return (got 2 this week ) but on top of the screener's critique I want to hear what actually made the grade.
3) I watch TAXI TV and the QHH (Quarantini Happy Hour) as often as I can and try to soak up what Michael and his guests are saying. I especially love the episodes when my fellow member's songs get played and critiqued by Music Supes, Publishers or the fantastic Robin Fredericks!
4) Lastly and very importantly I attend the annual Road Rally. I've been to all of them since I joined in 2015 and I've learned 99% of what I know about FILM/TV composing from the classes at the Road Rally. And I've made connections with fellow composers, and publishers that I would never have made on my own. Even though I live in a music town, it's invaluable to have all of these composers and industry pros all together under one roof.
5) Also buy Robin Frederic's and Dean Krippaehne's books. Robin's books especially caused the lightbulb to come on so many times I thought it was a strobe light
Best of luck fellow TAXI members and hopefully I'll get to see some of you at the 2022 Road Rally. John
