Vinyl album 'revival'... worth the cost to make?

Post by funsongs » Sat Dec 04, 2021 2:53 pm

SO - performing artists with a decent LIVE following can still sell CDs along with other merch... so I hear.
Who still owns and uses a turntable & stereo amp?

I keep hearing that vinyl LPs are making a comeback;
but maybe the cost of all the extra artwork and production only makes sense for those who have their own audience and fan-base already.

Any non-performing recording artist/songwriters making that kind of investment - or just more stuff to store in the garage? :? 8-)
Simply for art-sake; maybe my own hobby-jollies, I'm mildly tempted to print a nearly-done album -
Just Bluegrass
- a minimum order on vinyl.

It's okay if you wanna talk me out of it. :?

Hi Peter,
Some of my friends who put out EDM music out they will put out tracks on VINYL as an option for DJ' s that still spin records than done digitally. It increases their sale and VINYL are usually a pre-order sale and limited number as it is not cheap to make.

Another reason is of course that raw sound and real HI-Fi sound coming out of your speakers.

Yes, cool art work is another reason.

These reasons are gathered from my DJ friends but I am sure there are other reasons.

Other artists of different genres may do this too but I don't know of any.

Good luck.

I love vinyl, it's pretty much all I listen to unless I'm researching ALAs or something like that.

With the proper cutting lathe, you can make a playable disk out of about anything! :o ;)

Good Luck with your record! There is a long turnaround time, so you have to be willing to wait. It is a lot more costly than CD's but people are buying them. I printed of 100 records from Discmakers in 2020. Sold 75 of them. It was a hustle to make it happen and promoting and all that. I may have broken even, which is better than I had hoped for. I don't regret it, but not ready to jump in and do it again until the time is right.

That seems a pretty good number.

I'd recently watched a YouTube video on this subject: the artist 'crunched the numbers' - and with an order of 200 (he went kinda fancy) - he'd have to sell them
for $27 USD +/- to break even, and not LOSE money. And that' selling direct, without paying a retailer or middle-man.
To MAKE any profit... $28-$30 a record would probably price-point it out of the market.

So - it seems to come down to doing the vinyl thing has to be constrained as a marketing/PR/write-off/do-it-cause-you-can-afford-it-for-art's-sake/give-away item.
And be content with the results.
(...and... have plenty of storage space in your Garage.) :? 8-) :P

Fun to discuss but I think very few here are interested in selling physical media of any kind anymore. And for my own listening pleasure, hard to play a turntable in the car where I do most listening.

Most people here are writing cues or songs for potential sync. Even if well know acts put out some vinyl, not really seeing how that matters to folks like us (other than human interest).

Well... it was fun daydreaming about it... and doing a little window-shopping.
I think I've been sufficiently "talked out of it."
