Is this playful?

Post by ChrisUlmer » Tue Jan 25, 2022 11:08 am

Hi,
I usually listen back to my songs after getting a return and can completely hear what the screener means on how to improve. Sometimes I think the song is "there" but it still has some room for improvement, even if it's just to better fit the listing. In this case, though, I got some peers from other places to review (all said it sounded fun, quirky, and playful) and thought I listened closely to the reference track to "nail" this pitch. I actually even did some research on what makes a song "quirky" and "playful". The feedback was overall very positive but returned because it didn't fit the listing and could use more playful & quirky elements. Please listen and let me know what I could do to make this song better fit this listing and be more quirky and playful.

The Feedback I received for listing S220108EM:
[ What I like most about this song
Fun track. Good energy. I like the top line synth melody and groove. Cool builds, risers and transition effects.

I think you could improve this song by
This is a good EDM track. But for this request it needs a more "playful" and "quirky" vibe and perhaps "some very light Trap or Hip-Hop beats." I'd save this for a more relevant request.

I returned or forwarded this song because
Style and Mood are not the right fit for "playful" and "quirky."

Additional things I noticed...
Style/Genre is off target with the listing request / Mood is off target with the listing request ]

The Lisitng:
QUIRKY, PLAYFUL EDM INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a boutique Music Library that gets tons of placements in TV Shows!
Please submit modern EDM Instrumental Cues that could establish an overall fun, quirky, and playful feel in a range of scenes. Your submissions should have slick beats and polished production. Craft your Cues around a singular motif, and create a sense of forward momentum and dynamics by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress. Instrumentation in the general style of the references will suit your submissions best.
This Library is open to hearing Cues with "some very light Trap or Hip-Hop beats" incorporated into your pieces as well – as long as the overall feel remains rooted in the EDM genre.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Hmmm...this is an odd one. I find the ref track a bit quirky but not particularly playful. On listening to your track it sounds like you incorporated very similar elements, almost to the point of rebuilding the ref track, so although I don't find yours particularly playful either its so similar that its hard to imagine where the screener thinks you went wrong. If there really was just that one ref track I reckon you'd be justified in seeking some clarity from Taxi on the reason for the return (although I doubt they'll change their mind). However, there's usually 3 ref tracks, and if so then perhaps you chose to emulate one of the outliers.
Graham (UK). Still composing a little faster than decomposing, and 100% HI.

It's good for what it is. Where I hear "quirky" in the ref track, I hear "chaotic" in yours. The flow tends to be disrupted by the sound design elements. Not really a dance-party vibe, for me. And I agree with the screener that the "light ... trap elements" desired are pretty over-the-top in yours. As others have said, 'close, but not on the mark'.

Ok awesome, thanks all! I'm definitely hearing the difference more clearly now. Mine is heavily influenced by the Melbourne Bounce genre whereas the reference is a quirky take on that genre. I think the genre in general is playful and a bit quirky which is where I was confused but I hear where I'm missing the mark on what they were looking for.

I appreciate you all taking the time to give me that feedback and listening!
