Help with LO-FI BEDROOM POP INSTRUMENTALS
Hey Passengers,
Any feedback to my work in progress would be most appreciated. Also, is it on target with "the chill lo-fi'?
Teach Me
Some of my areas of concern that tend to come up in my feedback from screeners, that I'd really like to avoid this time:
- Could have a better developmental "arc"
- Melody could be stronger
- Recording/Mix needs improvement
*So if any of these are broken, please let me know.
If anything else stands out as messed up, feel free to comment.
Thanks in advance!
Brad

LO-FI BEDROOM POP INSTRUMENTALS and/or INSTRUMENTAL CUES
WARNING: The references may include graphic and explicit lyrics. Listener discretion is advised.

Woozy
Although the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals and/or Instrumental Cues only for this request.
Please submit well-produced Lo-Fi Bedroom Pop Instrumentals (or Cues) with solid melodies, engaging synths, excellent arrangements, fresh sound beds, and an overall relaxed, lo-fi feel. Your production and any virtual instruments or samples you use should be modern and generally competitive with the references and others like them – nothing dated will work, here. Imagine the type of music a teenager would listen to in their room while they're doing homework – that's the sound they're looking for!
IMPORTANT NOTE: This Company offers an Exclusive deal, and has a strong preference for signing material from songwriters who have worked for libraries and licensing companies in the past and understand how standard deals work. If you don't have that experience and you don't know the drill on typical deals, they politely ask that you don't submit to this request.
All submissions should be at least 1:45 minutes long and no longer than 2:45 minutes, with non-faded, buttoned endings. Do NOT copy the referenced examples in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. TAXI # S220219BR

Re: Help with LO-FI BEDROOM POP INSTRUMENTALS
From the hip....
Bass is too loud / prominent / fat
Whole mix needs more of that tape saturation vibe and more compression
Tamb is a bit stiff, I would try a more interesting pattern and set it further back in the mix
Kick is barely audible
Try pitching the snare down quite a bit
That's off the top of my head on a quick listen. Not bad overall but needs production tweaks.

Re: Help with LO-FI BEDROOM POP INSTRUMENTALS
Thanks Mark,
I think when I did the master w/ izotope, it beefed it up too much on me; the low end that is. Will definitely adjust. I was trying to match that bass sound as close as possible, it was plucky without a ton of low end. The snare sounds in the reference are also a bit softer than what I'm using, and my high-hat is standing out a bit too much too. I like the suggestion about the tamb part, I'll check that out too.
I'll check out the kick sounds too.
Appreciate the feedback!

Re: Help with LO-FI BEDROOM POP INSTRUMENTALS
Hey Brad,
I agree with Mark's points, but I do like this!
I don't know what lo-fi pop is but it has the right vibe from the references IMO
Good job man, get the production smoothed out and this is really good

Re: Help with LO-FI BEDROOM POP INSTRUMENTALS
I think the goal with these is to START with a lo-fi sound and find a way to make it pop for an artist. The best lo-fi reference is LoFi Girl
I think your track sounds really close to the first reference on the taxi listing IMO, which might not be a good idea.

Thanks Dave, appreciate the feedback.
I have some time so will work on the polishing. It was just making sure it wasn't too repetitive, or that it developed to go somewhere.
Cheers,
Brad

I'll check out the reference you provided. I've listened to a little lo-fi, but this is my first lo-fi creation.
As far as being close to the reference, I did use the same tempo and tried to leverage the feel and style. Different keys, some different timing in the changes as well. I was really trying hard to capture that wandering plucky bass sound, and went with a wandering part that I had to dial back a bit.
But I'll do a doublecheck to make sure its not too close.
Appreciate the feedback,
Brad

Lofi Girl is great for learning more about the genre, but still use the listing references as your target for this track.

Agreed on both fronts Paulie. I went and checked out Lo-fi girl and other YouTube channels. Really cool low-key vibe to play while you work. =)

I've tried to do that, as well as listening to it when I go to bed, but the common crispy snares tend to bother me at times.
