Production/recording returns

Post by elser » Wed Jun 29, 2022 10:55 am

I just had a couple returns, no big deal but the only reason given was production/recording. I wonder if anyone here might have some insight. The two songs are Swankee Dank and Muddy Boots on my Taxi page.
Thank you.

One possibility is that your Taxi page is not set to public?

So many nice things about your tracks, Jon! But I know that's not why you're here, so... ;)

If I had to second-guess the screener, I might think these two things:
1. There's a lot of instruments coming in and out. Sparser would be better for sync. Too many voices competing for the listener's attention.
2. Some of the lead lines jump out at me, better control over the balance would fix that.

If that's what the screener heard, then remixing might be the ticket. Note: I did not listen on studio monitors (just regular PC monitors), so I didn't hear any recording issues.

I think the music in both tracks is solid, the density of the mix is what jumps out to me. Just looking at the wave form you see the solid brick pattern, no dynamic range. There's a lot going on, I might be hearing some clipping as well. A rule of thumb I use is "what is the main instrument that the listener should focus on in this phrase?" If the guitar lead is the focus, then take down the rhythm guitar or other instruments a little so that they are all not competing for the same levels.

Or possibly look into sidechain compression.

Hey there! You've got some solid playing here, well done! To me, both tracks sound overly compressed and EQ'd to the point of being a bit thin. Are you using some mastering plug-ins your stereo buss?
