Hi all. If a collaborator send me a cello track and says “I’ve left it with tons of headroom to allow you to mix it in” assuming I know what he is talking about- And it turns out that just turning it up in the Logic mixing window even to the top of the fader only gets it to a peak level of about -12 or something.
What comes next- do I bring it up with a limiter to reach a peak level of say -6?
For context it’s an “introspective piano instrumental” with sampled solo cello and a gentle synth pad. Thank you!

There's multiple ways.
Turn up the channel gain
Normalize the audio clip
Use a compressor or limiter and push it up
You have to decide which is best in the context of the track you are mixing.

As already mentioned there are a bunch of ways to address that. In Pro Tools I'd reach for the clip gain to raise it, as that also increases the size of the visible wave form (for ease of editing etc.).

I'm new to taxi and just saw this post. If you come across this again in the future, for Logic ProX, try using the Gain plugin on the Instrument's (in this case the cello's) channel strip. Very little CPU usage.
