What's Up With Canada, eh?

Post by Paulie » Sat Aug 13, 2022 7:28 am

Another Taxi listing asking for Canadian composers only... can anyone share the legal logic behind this? #BlameCanada. :)

A Bunch of TRAP/HIP-HOP INSTRUMENTAL CUES by CANADIAN COMPOSERS are needed by a globally distributed Music Licensing Company that's had a lot of success landing TONS of Major Network placements every year!

This Company is searching high and low for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumental Cues that could be heard on a playlist with the references below:

Real Housewives of Atlanta (from 2:38 - 3:08)

Ladies Who List: Atlanta (from 4:26 - 5:03)

Real Housewives of Atlanta (from 4:03 - 4:30)

NOTE: This Company is looking for material that comes from composers that are Canadian for Canadian projects. As long as ONE of the writers on the copyright has Canadian citizenship, it's okay to submit. Meaning, if you're a TAXI member in, say, the USA, and you collaborate/co-write with a Canadian, then it's fair game to submit to this request.

Please submit well-produced Hip-Hop/Trap Instrumental Cues with slick beats, simple motifs, solid arrangements, and plenty of cool energy that could work well for TV and Film placements in the Canadian market. Hip-Hop instrumentation in the general style of the references will work best for this request – and don't forget the Trap elements! Craft your Cues around a central motif and layer instrumentation in and out as they progress to create a sense of forward motion, interest, and dynamics. Please be sure your production and any virtual sounds or samples you use are high-quality and not dated sounding.

Your submissions should be about 90 seconds to 2 minutes long, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings will work best. Do NOT copy the referenced material in any way, shape, or form. Use it only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This Company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal, so the material you submit for this request CANNOT be signed with other publishers or catalogs. Sync fees will be split 50/50. The Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll keep 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. Please submit as many Instrumental Cues as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Friday, September 2nd, 2022. TAXI # S220902HH

As a Canadian myself, I never submit to these listings, because I know what they are all about, namely government protectionism that actually, in the end, makes it so much worse for Canadian musicians.

One of the great things about the US is that it seems to realize that legal protectionism usually backfires, and so when it comes to talent, is more often about meritocracy (irrespective of where you're from).

If the canadian authorities realized that, in order to spur artist innovation and creativity, they needed to GET OUT OF THE WAY instead of hand holding and coddling, we would be doing much better as a country. But as it is now, with all this legal protectionism, it actually just continues to strengthen foreign markets like the US, who don't have this silly nonsense.

Anyways, sorry for the blunt and irritated talk, but the canadian "ministry of creativity" is actually such a huge obstacle to canadian artist renaissance.

I'm not Canadian, and you're probably right about all that stuff, but I'll forever be grateful to your country for birthing Devin Townsend, who I consider to be the most brilliant and creative musical mind on the planet right now.

Oh yes, Canada has had so many brilliant musicians, so I don’t mean to imply otherwise, and forgive my irritation, and in no way mean to disparage taxi, as they obviously have no control over that.

I love Canadian culture though and so much more talent up here than we realize! :)

Never underestimate the power of polar bears and snow sleds and winter toques to spur creativity, eh!

It's the New Year's BBQ with burgers sizzling out on the snowladen patio that really makes us shine :)

(I will add that I have seen several 'US-only composers' listings over the years.)

This probably has no legal reason, but can be related to grants. Some conditions in productions can be that a grant is only given if a certain number of domestic staff is employed or domestic artists are picked for camera, lighting, story etc. This also applies to music. Movie productions must abide to these terms, else they don't get the fund for their project. This is not necessarily linked to government regulations, but also private funding. The listings don't tell, and probably Taxi does not even know.
