How I Make Cinematic Music For Brands/Ads/Commercials Pt 1 | Direct Placements

Post by markhimley » Tue Sep 27, 2022 1:58 pm

Hey everyone!

I've just recently this year started making YouTube videos sharing my experience with music licensing/sync. It's something I'm very excited about and I want to make videos that are genuinely helpful for those who are new to this industry.

I’m very excited to be sharing this video that just went live today as I think it could be helpful for some members in here; this is part 1 in a 2 part series where I’m going to be showing you how I create cinematic music for brands and ads. In this video, part 1, I’m going to be showing you how I landed two 60 second ad spots with Peter Millar. In this situation I actually worked directly with the music producer of the ads so I had to handle the negotiations, licensing agreement, etc by myself. I explain what that process was like and how it happened, and then I go through and break down the two pieces I wrote for those ads and show you exactly how I created and produced the music.

Next week, in part 2, I’m going to show how I landed two ad spots with Yamaha Boats with a Cinematic Pop song called “On My Mind” that I produced and co-wrote. These placements were landed through a music library/publisher, so I explain how that process was different, how it all happened, and then I go through the entire production and break it down so you can see exactly how I produced the song.

I haven’t seen many videos like this on YouTube, and they are definitely videos I wish I had when I started doing this kind of stuff. Thankfully the music I’m breaking down in these videos is all signed non-exclusively so I have the freedom (and permission of co-writers) to make these videos. With many sync placements, deals, situations, etc like this you don’t necessarily always have the right to make public videos about it, so I’m glad it worked out this way for these ad placements and pieces of music.

I really hope this is helpful for those of you trying to get into this kind of stuff.

Any and all feedback is warmly welcomed and appreciated :) I want these videos to be as helpful as possible.

Awesome video! Can't wait to check out more. I subscribed to your channel.

That elec cello sound is so packed full of overtones! What a great sample.

I will be looking for a video that describes your bus 11-18 ;)

Thanks for posting :)

Hey thank you so much!!

Yes it’s a great sound for sure, Spitfire has a way of creating tons of great and easily usable sounds in their instruments :)

I actually do already have a video covering that! :) It’s in the video where I show how I made my template and walk through how to create one. Feel free to watch here: https://youtu.be/tKOfPEjhOCc

Thanks again!!
