Feedback for Feel Good Old School Hip Hop

Post by eandersonmusic » Tue Jan 10, 2023 12:41 pm

Hey Forum Fam!

So I'm working on a cue for the listing below, and I feel pretty good about it..
I'm mostly wondering if the melody instrument is ok, is it a dated sound?, does that matter?
I'm currently using an organ as the melody instrument, I initially had a Rhodes playing the melody, but it was a bit harsh in the upper range.. I was thinking about using a flute, but I don't feel I have a good enough one to use as melody, so I tried a few organ sounds and kinda like this one.

What are your thoughts, and please feel free to comment on other aspects of the cue that I may be overlooking.
Thanks in advance!

Here's the listing-

FEEL-GOOD, OLD-SCHOOL-Style HIP-HOP INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a globally distributed Music Licensing Company that's had a lot of success landing TONS of Major Network placements every year!

They're searching for Mid-to-Up Tempo Instrumental Cues in the general wheelhouse of the examples below:

Doordash NBA Commercial

"Love It Here" by Elzhi feat. Slum Village & B. R. Gunna

"Feel Alright" by LNDN DRGS

Although some of the references have vocals, please submit Instrumental Cues only for this request.

Send them in well-produced Hip-Hop Instrumental Cues brimming with tons of emotionally uplifting, feel-good energy and vibes that could work well for TV commercials! Your submissions should have memorable motifs, engaging rhythms, solid arrangements, and plenty of old-school Hip-Hop appeal. Hip-Hop instrumentation in the general wheelhouse of the references will work best for this request. Craft your Cues around a central motif and create forward motion, interest, and dynamics by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress – avoid anything too "looped" sounding. Please be sure your production and any virtual instruments you use are high-quality and polished.

Your submissions should be about 90 seconds to 2 minutes long, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings will work best. Do NOT copy the referenced material in any way, shape, or form. Use it only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of any other artists’ music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed.

NOTE: Do NOT submit any tracks with spoken producer tags/watermarks as they're not usable for film and TV placements.

This Company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal, so the material you submit for this request CANNOT be signed with other publishers or catalogs. Sync fees will be split 50/50. The Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll keep 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. Please submit as many Instrumental Cues as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PST) on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023. TAXI # S230118HH

The examples are kinda all over the place, so I did my best to incorporate the elements that I feel we're supposed to focus on.

Fun groove... the breakdown section is much too quiet, bring it back up in volume. The breakdown should be a musical one, not just a lowering of the volume and EQ. The bass might be a little hot compared to the second and third references, there is more gritty drumming going on. Maybe bring up the hi hat and second snare, or change out the hi hat with a more acoustic sounding one. I think you are close!
