Feedback - Here Come Santa Claus

Post by psteege » Wed Jan 11, 2023 12:32 pm

Hi All,

Looking for some feedback on my little marching ditty.

I was about to go to bed when i saw the listing and had a go, though i managed to balls up the submission by editing the file on the artist page and not the submission itself so i don't live in hope for this one :/
However, this is the new version and any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Pete.

Pete-
I like this mix, but honestly I may have preferred your previous mix.. it had a little more realness/rawness to it which I think they may want based off the listing. It had a nice "live" sound to it, being not perfectly balanced. I'd have to A/B this against your previous mix, but either way I hope you get it with this one!

Hi Erik,

Thanks for the comments, here's the 1st version (below - which is the version that i inadvertently submitted).. I changed it mainly because i thought some sections of the arrangement were a bit weak, and some parts didn't really come through, whilst -trying- to get an 'outside' / live feel to the mix.

I do struggle getting mixes consistent plus given extra fiddling time i do tend to want to try and "improve" things rather than letting it be  but maybe i went to clean on this version.

Yes, kudos on the fast turnaround! I was looking to finish my version today but now I don't see it on the site. Have I made the mistake of thinking I had all day today to complete it?

Are those all MIDI instruments or did you play any of them live?

Yeah there's something about this mix/arrangement that I personally like more than the updated version.
It seems to better represent a band playing the tune live, as if you are there, with the imperfections of the instrument level balance.. the snares would be the loudest in a live setting, and the tubas would be somewhat unclear. If the scene in the movie is based upon seeing/hearing the song in a live setting, than I think it's a winner.

Thanks Erik, thats useful info. Yes i think if i remember rightly the music is placed over a real marching band.
Maybe i was just over-thinking the second version,

I had a crack at this.

https://www.taxi.com/members/k42FZOv_Sp ... inging-mix

It got returned though, saying it needs to sound more like it was a field recording, which could easily be addressed with a few tweaks. But hey ho, the client will never get the chance to hear it.

Your attempt sounds great by the way.

Hey! I really like your arrangement it's much more interesting than mine

Sorry to hear it got returned, alas, mine did too citing rhythm issues, which i'm not all that surprised at really since i finished the original at 6am then amended the next day but i'd already submitted the first version. I didn't realise changing the song on the artist page doesn't change the submission song so I've got a bee in my bonnet that i didn't realise that but never mind, heres to the time someone requests a marching band cover of Here Comes Santa Claus! :D
