how much to offer co writer if I want to re arrange and record without them
I co-wrote a song last year. The song is great but the arrangement isn't working. We currently have a split sheet for 50/50 of writer's share but I want to take it to the team of musicians I work with often and totally rearrange it. If I pay for all of this out of my pocket and am the producer how do I approach co writer and make an offer. I want them to still get something of course but I think half is too much. Do I make a new split sheet? What would be a fair or market offer? Thanks for your advice in advance.

Have you talked to them about paying half the cost for a rewrite/rerecord?

I had the same question! The cleanest thing would be for that so both composition and master for the new version are split 50/50. It *IS* possible to split composition and master differently (e.g. composition 50/50, master 90/10) but it can get confusing and messy. BTW, since they own half the composition regardless, you would still need their signature on any deals even if you own 100% of the new master.hummingbird wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:31 pmHave you talked to them about paying half the cost for a rewrite/rerecord?

You always respond so fully to my questions Casey thanks for your time. I’m really not interested in screwing my co writer and want to keep as clean as possible. I think I’ll just suck it up. See if I can get him to pay half and if not I’ll just pay it and do it my way but still leave the original deal as is.
