LoFi Hip Hop listing

Post by greggo » Sun Dec 10, 2023 6:39 pm

Hello! First time writing in this genre. Would this work for the Lo-Fi listing? Thanks!

https://s.disco.ac/jfjibrvformv

Here's the brief:

Lots of LO-FI HIP-HOP INSTRUMENTALS and/or INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a Great Music Licensing Company with lots of Film and TV placements. They need a bunch of great new tracks to meet increased demand in this genre!

This Library is looking for several Instrumentals (and/or Cues) in the general stylistic ballpark of the following references:

"sunsmoke" by Wun Two

"Green Cascade" by Jobii

"Bunaa" by lorleaf

Please submit top-tier Lo-Fi Hip-Hop Instrumentals that have a mellow and relaxing sound and vibe, and could be heard on a playlist along with the reference tracks! Your submissions should have warm and melodic motifs, Lo-Fi Hip-Hop-style drums, and dynamic arrangements with plenty of forward motion and interest throughout. Instrumentation that's in the general ballpark of the references will work best (think warm keys, guitar, bass, drums, etc.). Please be sure your production is polished and any virtual instruments or samples you may use are not dated-sounding.

Your submissions should be roughly 90 Seconds long for Cues, and about 2 to 4 minutes long for Instrumentals, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings will work best. Please do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, and tone. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of any other artists’ music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Hey there -- I'm new to working in this genre as well, congrats for trying something new! I really liked your track and think you've got a good start. Love the vibe, guitars, and hook. I felt the second half sort of lost its way, though, and didn't think the calliope or the horn part worked. The ending wasn't very strong, and I would have liked to hear the original melody come back in to bring the piece full-circle. Keep in mind I'm super new to this genre, and hopefully you'll hear from some more experienced producers in this genre. Very well done so far, and good luck with it. :) DK

stuff starts feeling kind of random around the 1 minute mark. The straight 16th note hi hat pattern gives the track too much of a trap vibe. I'd recommend more of an 1/8th note groove and/or adjusting the swing of the 16th note hat pattern. Best of luck!

Thanks for the feedback, Douglas and mteezykeys! I took out some of the random clutter, put the beginning motif at the end, changed the hihat, took some high end off of the mix.

Sounds a lot better and closer to the style than before. I would consider changing the kick pattern or at least adding some variation to it. Also maybe kill the high end frequencies on the bass track.. make it a little more tubby or muffled sounding. I know it's due today so hopefully you still have a little time to work on it a bit more, but it seems pretty good. Great advice from everyone else too, definitely an improvement, hope it gets through.

That's awesome Gregg, congrats bud! My track was returned, bass too loud, but glad yers made it thru. When I got the return feedback that my bass trk was too loud I was like uggh.. hope I didn't ruin anyone else's chance, so I'm glad my advice helped and didn't end up blowing your chance at a forward.
Oh your links don't work though, I guess your account is private. But again congrats bud, perfect use of this forum, great advice from Doug and Michael as well! Very cool 👍

Sorry about your return Erik I'll probably post up in the forwards section, but here's the final: https://s.disco.ac/dvkgtfkvfido
The screener said he liked the vibe, but didn't like the FX at 1:44, but forwarded anyway. Just never know :|
