Jazzy Chillhop Instrumental

Post by DouglasKnight » Sat Dec 16, 2023 9:14 pm

Hey All,

I'm trying out another new genre and would really appreciate any feedback prior to the listing deadline on Sunday 12/17 for this track: https://s.disco.ac/hgpjqipepksw

Here's the listing info: https://www.taxi.com/industry#listing-S231217JC

references:

"By Chance" by CMJ. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Cd3rgdnOU

"Scenery" by halfpastseven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsleBMOdqkI

"Calma" by young.vishnu, Pachakuti & Leon Raum. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ5wZ19o6IY

Please submit well-crafted Chillhop Instrumentals with a Jazzy twist that could work well for a variety of sync placements! Your submissions should have catchy melodies, engaging beats, great musicianship, and dynamic arrangements with lots of forward motion and interest. Instrumentation that seamlessly blends Jazz and Hip-Hop with an overall chill and relaxing feel will work best for this pitch (electric keys, guitar, bass, drums, etc.). Please make sure your production is polished and any virtual instruments or samples you use are high-quality and not dated-sounding.

All submissions should be about 90 seconds to 2 minutes long, give or take.

Many thanks!
Doug

Hey Doug!
Cool track, but I'm not sure if it's right for the listing IMO. I know the 1st reference has a somewhat retro feel as far the groove and what's being played, but it's done in a way that is current sounding. And the other examples are definitely current sounding. I think your track has a bit too much of that retro feel and groove, but I do feel the section at 1:00 - 1:15 is more on target. Hope this is helpful in some way.

I think this is a good track, but not good for the listing. Compare the overall rhythm section feel of the refernences, find what they have in common. Listen for the instrumentation, the sparseness, the groove feel. Your track is a solid 90s smooth jazz/pop groove that could find a home, but the feel isn't right based on the references.

Hey Paulie, thanks for listening and for your help and encouragement on this one. It was returned, here's the feedback:

What I like most about this song
I like how full this sounds and the track duration fits the listing requirements.

I think you could improve this song by
While I like this track, I'm missing more of the jazzy tone.

I returned or forwarded this song because
Tone could be closer to the jazzy feel that the listing wants.

I had a great time making it, so even though it wasn't forwarded this time I will hope to find a place for it at some point!

Cheers,
DK
