Dramedy Cue Review and Pizz Strings

Post by tcummings » Fri Jan 12, 2024 11:51 am

Hi all,

I am looking for some input on two issues:
1. Pizz strings sound quality
2. Dramedy cue review and comments

My cue can be found here: https://on.soundcloud.com/q22pk

1. I am working with Cinestrings in the cue above and just can't seem to find the sweet spot I am looking for. Does anyone have any input on how to give more "air" and "depth of field" to these strings -- push them back a bit? If I add reverb from Logic or the Cine interface, it doesn't seem to help. I have compressed them just a bit. Would love them to sound like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhTGnk_ ... M0&index=1

2. I would welcome any comments on this cue! The brief is a recent dispatch brief (below). Thank you and Best Wishes to the Taxi Community!

HIP-HOP DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTALS and/or INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a European Music Licensing Company with TONS of Film/TV placements, many of them for TAXI Members!

This Company is searching for several Instrumentals and/or Cues that could be found on a playlist with the following references and others like them:

Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles (from 1:08 - 1:20)

The Kardashians (from 4:54-5:16)

The Real Housewives of New Jersey (from 2:43 - 3:03)

The Kardashians (from 6:13-6:40)

Please submit well-crafted Hip-Hop/Dramedy Instrumentals and/or Cues with a quirky, light, dramatic sound and style! Your submissions should have mischievous motifs, solid beats, and dynamic arrangements with lots of forward motion and building interest as it progresses. Instrumentation that's in the general stylistic ballpark of the references will work best (pizzicato strings, Hip-Hop-style drums, etc.). Please make sure that any virtual instruments or samples you use are high-quality and not dated-sounding.

Your submissions should be roughly 90 Seconds long for Cues, and about 2 to 4 minutes long for Instrumentals, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings will work best. Please do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, and tone. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of any other artists’ music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal, so please be sure the Instrumentals and/or Cues you pitch for this opportunity are NOT already signed with any other Companies or Catalogs. Any sync fees will be split 50/50 with the Company. You'll get 100% of the Writer's share, and the Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher's share. You must own or control your Masters and Copyright to submit. Please submit as many Instrumentals and/or Cues as you'd like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PST) on Monday, January 22nd, 2024. TAXI Dispatch # D240122RY

I think the Pizzi strings sound good, but the track might not be hip hop enough. The percussion takes into a Latin vibe more than hip hop.

I agree with Paulie, your tune leans very much on the Latin side

Very nice track! I do agree with the aforementioned comments.

Personally, I wouldn't sweat the pizz sound.

I'm still a student of hip hop, but I have signed similar cues. I don't mean this to be bad form, but it was helpful to me when another TAXI member shared their track for me to compare with, so I wanted to do the same (https://on.soundcloud.com/YoP1a). I think it's the bongos giving it that Latin sound. Maybe add a tighter kick and some hi hats?

Hope this is helpful! Again, great track!

Put some OTT on it then roll off some top

In actuality, this problem calls for taking the device-appropriate link quality into account. Although the Pizzi strings have a pleasing tone, the music may not have enough hip hopbasketbros. I concur with Paulie's earlier remarks.
