Female backing vocal for a male song

Post by WSAO » Fri May 17, 2024 11:18 pm

Is it acceptable to have a female backing vocalist (alongside the male lead singer) in a song when they specifically ask for a male singer?

Thanks!

I would say it's fine if the female backing vocal is at a fairly low level in the background to add coloring to the male lead, but not at all dominant, it's OK. I'm assuming you mean parallel vocal like a harmony, not anything syncopated such that the female voice is heard alone.

A good test would be: Would anybody listening really notice a female voice in there? Or does it just blend in like a high harmony? The latter seems OK to ME.

You could always post a sample.

Best,
:D Casey

Thanks Cassey,

Yep that's the idea, to add some colour to the main vocal.

Cheers!

Hi BBCode,
Just to clarify, what do you mean by "backing vocal". There are generally 3 types of vocals, lead vocal, harmony vocals, and background vocals.
A background vocal is a different part from the lead vocal, a lot of musicians get terms mixed up. I'm guessing you mean a harmony vocal?
