Brief vs. Reference Tracks, continued

Post by RealPickle » Tue Jul 02, 2024 5:34 pm

A few of us had a discussion about balancing what the brief asks for vs. what the reference tracks sound like. I'll admit that's been my biggest hurdle to forwards thus far, and I got it wrong again apparently on the Ambient Investigative/Tension brief.
Here was the brief:
AMBIENT INVESTIGATIVE/TENSION INSTRUMENTALS CUES are needed by an International Music Library with lots of great placements in Film and TV.

Please listen to the following references to get yourself in the general wheelhouse of what this Library needs:

"John Doe" by LVKEHOUSE--https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoxxBeH7J3Q

"Remorse" by Cinematic Music--https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d2nz7Ais5A

"Confession Tapes" by Fractured Light Music

Please submit well-composed Investigative/Tension Instrumentals Cues with an ambient sound and a sense of growing suspense and tension. Your submissions should have captivating motifs, subtle rhythms, and dynamic arrangements with plenty of forward momentum, dynamics, and interest. Electronic and/or Orchestral Instrumentation in the general wheelhouse of the references will work best for this request – think dark synths, orchestral elements, ethereal pads, etc. Your production and any virtual sounds or samples you use need to be high-quality and not dated-sounding. Keep your submissions on the simple side and remember that this is all about setting a mood!

I liinked to the two references I really tried to follow (especially "Remorse") My feedback was that mine was too rhythmic, and the cello line was too "somber". I don't even really disagree with either critique, and I'm still learning this whole "investigative tension" genre, but IMHO my track is bang on the vibe and style of both of the linked references above. So put it on the pile of evidence to not pay *too* much attention to the references, I guess. Obviously would welcome any feedback, but this post is mostly me processing "out loud". Thanks for listening, I'll hang up now :)

A common mistake is to follow one refernce track more closely , instead of triangulating what's common between all of them
