Temp electronic score return

Post by hubert » Sat Jul 13, 2024 9:48 am

Just got another return for which I don't quite get the feedback.

The gist of the listing is:
This Film's Producer is on the hunt for Instrumentals that could work as a replacement for "Fletch Theme" by Harold Faltermeyer, which is currently temped in:

They're NOT looking for clones or soundalikes! Similar tempo, style, and overall vibe? Yes. Clones? No!

QUOTING THE FILM'S PRODUCER: "We need electronic/instrumental score showing the lead characters spying, following, peering around corners, sneaking around. Would be used in subsequent scenes with internet investigations and discovery."

Please submit well-crafted Instrumentals that convey drama, excitement, and lots of "on the case" type energy! Your submissions should have dramatic motifs, catchy melodies and solid arrangements with plenty of dynamics, forward movement, and interest throughout. Instrumentation in the general stylistic wheelhouse of the reference will work best, such as synths, drums, bass, etc. Please be sure any virtual instruments or samples you use are high-quality and genre-appropriate.

NOTE: The Producer let us know that they are not necessarily looking for anything with an '80s sound (though we think that approach could work, given the reference). It's more about the vibe, emotion, and sound.
Here is my submission: https://www.taxi.com/members/cezSk9GdRw ... quirky-cop

And here is the feedback:
This is good, yet, for this request, try an alt-arrangement and create a "chorus-like" section at 0:39. Listen to the reference and map out the structure. Try to "fit" this arrangement into this structure (when does the verse/chorus come in etc.) You are replacing a temp piece of music, so having a similar structure works best for this request.

The track has a good attitude, yet, it could benefit from a revision in the arrangement/structure to get closer to the desired “Electronic Investigative” character style of arrangement/structure as referenced and requested in the listing.
There are several things that I don't quite get:
  • The listing did not mention that we had to copy the structure of the track. Was it implied because it was a temp track?
  • I don't hear a chorus at 0:39. It's the same motif as before, but with a few more layers added. Which is precisely what I did in my submission.
  • Listening to the tracks that were forwarded, I don't hear the structure that the screener is talking about. They each do something different
Am I missing something here? (probably! :D ).
I don't mind returns when the feedback makes sense, but I don't quite get it in this case.

I'd say yes. The scene has probably already been cut and edited to length. The pulse and flow of the replacement track must match exactly what they have come to expect.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, much appreciated! Ok, so I get it, "temp track" = "follow the structure exactly".
Learning about these things is a big benefit of Taxi - Live and learn :)
