Thought I would introduce myself

Post by buildingcastles » Mon May 26, 2008 5:30 am

Hey, everyone. New guy here. I discovered taxi about ten years ago, but hadn't really payed it much attention until recently, when I got serious about my music. I am not yet a paying member, but I will be once I get some more songs finished. I thought I would start getting to know people in the forums, though. I haven't read much, but so far, it seems like a pretty nice bunch of people here. Some music forums seem pretty toxic; like everyone's trying to claw their way to the top by dragging everyone down. Maybe the fact that their are paid services offered here draws a more serious, confident crowd. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know people around here. A little about myself: Born and raised in Alaska, so I'm a little out of the loop. I've played piano on and off (mostly off lol) for most of my life, I picked up (and never put down) the guitar when I was 17, and I've been singing for as long as I can remember. After searching for musicians for years (that's how I originallly found this site) and learning to understand myself better, I realized I was better off a one-man act. I am a control freak when it comes to writing. I want to write every aspect from start to finish. I write hip hop, rocktronica, vocal trance, dance, synth pop, and any combinations of those. I know people say to try to pick a damn genre, but I won't do that. I just write what's in my head, and if that makes it harder to market, so be it. I'd love to get rich off of my music, but I am an artist first, and a businessman second. Most people say businessmen are cold killers, but I will murder the businessman in me if he gets in the way of my vision. I'll shut up now. I've rambled on long enough, and it's already turned violent. Oh, and I do have one finished rough draft of a song that can be found in my sig. The vocals will be redone once I've worked on my voice a little more and get a little better at recording vocals. It also hasn't been mixed, because my computer will crap itself if I run all tracks at once (upgrading soon!).

The talent here vs the helpfulness is just the opposite of what you might expect. Lots of people with boatloads of talent (and deals to match) so they could be snooty but they're not. They take lots of time to help newcomers and oldcomers alike. Then every once in a while there are those who say things like "You need to Google me to see who I am!!!!". They usually don't stay long (because we don't Google them and don't really care who they are). I came to the forum in 2004 (I think) and although I've been away recently because of a crazy schedule, it's indespensible to me for music growth, connections and all around fun.Quote:I write hip hop, rocktronica, vocal trance, dance, synth pop, and any combinations of those. There's lots of opportunities for cross-genre stuff as long as it sets a definite mood (for film/television placements at least). A Rock-tronica track that sets a mood of excitement will go a lot further than a pure electronica track that starts happy, gets sad toward the middle and ends with a mysterious feel. Welcome to the forum and looking forward to hearing your stuff.Dave

Hi there,Welcome to the forums, like yourself I am sitting on the edge waiting to jump into Taxi. I have a lot more work to do but I owe it to this bunch that I have made progress. I first joined in 2005, got lost somewhere between and made a come back this year. Never even looked up any other music forums, no idea what else there is out there and tbh I don't want to know! I'm really happy here.I'm on my second listen of "Break Through" it's really good. I have a massive heart for dance/trance/electronica. I'm a big fan of Depeche Mode. Have to say if that's you singing (which I believe it to be) you sound like Robert Smith (The Cure), brilliant!Hope you settle in well,Linzi

Welcome aboard!Commit to the membership when you're ready....or, in fact, do it when you're not ready, just in case it helps move things along. Some great folks are on these boards, and they are very ready to help.

Yeah, that's me singing, and now I've had 3 different people tell me I sound like Robert Smith, so there must be something to that. I'm still trying to get used to hearing my own voice in recordings, so it's nice to hear that I remind people of one of my heroes. I've only heard good things about Taxi, and I know they've been around for years, so they must be doing something right. Thanks for the welcome from others as well.

Jazz, world, lately this really strange stuff with Vikki (hummingbird) that we haven't been able to identify, r&b, pop, rock, blues, alternative. I'm starting to narrow things down a bit though. I'm sure I hear some sighs of relief out there. (hush! LOL)You can check out my stuff via my links below if you wanna. Meantime, hope you're having fun already. And yeah, it's weird to hear your voice, isn't it? I got used to it ages ago but I can still remember the first time.
