The "Name That Listing" game......
Hello fellow Dots,I've been reading lots of posts questioning genres - eg:- "Does this sound like children's music?", "Does this sound like news?" etc .... I thought that rather than giving the "Dot Reviewer" a preconceived idea about the music - maybe people could sometimes just link to the track, leave the Dot with an "empty brain" and then say something like:-<music track inserted here> What does this sound like?a) Sadb) Actionc) Newsd) Children'se) CrazyDot Reviewers then reply with one of the following:-a) Sadb) Actionc) Newsd) Children'se) Crazyf) "I'm sorry, it just doesn't sound like any of the above genres - please don't shoot me" "The O-Factor".......you could also give the track an "obvious factor" rating 1-10 - "10" being the best and meaning than it was completely obvious/instantly recognizable it was that genre or "1" meaning that you sat through the whole track guessing.Could also apply the above guessing game for people targeting a specific film / T.V scene eg:-Is this track for:-a) Girl driving along country roadb) Girl entering party scenec) Girl drunk too much with a headache.Maybe something like this has already been done.....but I just thought it could be a bit of fun. If all Dot reviewers answer the 'correct' genre, then you know you're on track but if 99% say it's News when you've written for Children's - you know that something has gone horribly wrong!! (or that you should submit it to a News listing!) If you list very similar genres or very similar scenes as options - it'll be even harder obviously.....Just an idea.......

It IS vital that you know who you sound like and what genre your song is. I got an email from a music publisher (regarding a Taxi forward), and they wanted no less than 3 a la artists plus genre, plus theme (atmosphere) specified when completing the paperwork. Crucial stuff.

Crucial stuff.Yea, that's pretty common in the paperwork for music libraries and sometimes it's not easy especially the "sounds like". One suggestion is to ask a bunch of people, such as here on the board, to say who they think you sound like and then, in addition to sampling THOSE artists on amazon.com, sample the other artists that amazon will recommend (e.g. people who like so-and-so also may like so-and-so)... With thousands of songs, they need some way of categorizing your work in their database for keyword searches. Good luck!Casey

I think this is a clever idea to put people on the same page when talking about a song.Understanding the genre and description issue is something that you can get guidance from the dots about, but the songwriter needs to learn as well. Unless you can understand WHY a song is in genre "a" (i.e. hot hot ac) versus genre "b" (i.e. ac ) its hard to submit appropriately. Also, as Vikki said, the "a la" and mood requirements are important. Maybe in your suggestion a line can be thrown in for the songwriter to put the "a la" info as well? Also check out this thread - this may help you know what exactly Taxi looks at, and many of the forum members touch on these points when listening - http://taxi.proboards27.com/index.cgi?a ... 717&page=1(I hope that link works!)Welcome to the boards!!!

Quote:Maybe in your suggestion a line can be thrown in for the songwriter to put the "a la" info as well?Hi Anne - yes that'd also be something cool to add. I suggested the above because if someone says to me "Does this sound like news?" - before I hit play - I'm thinking "NEWS NEWS NEWS!" and I'd rather hit play knowing nothing so I can give an opinion 100% from the music alone. People could even copy/paste the actual listing they're writing for along with a few other 'similar' listings and see if other dots can identify the listing they've written for. I don't want to imagine some of the "T.V / Film scene scenarios" though that some of these mad dots may come up with!!!Best wishesRachel

I DO, however, agree that often times, I prefer to go with my gut, visceral reaction to music, rather than being told what it's supposed to sound like. So, do you take the money, or should you go for what's behind door number Three?
