Quote:If you can pare it to five I will be interested to see what you are left with.I guess in trying to 'pare it to five', I will list the groups that are the most influential to the way I personally approach composition and the way I play bass... while trying to stick to 'rock', although I have a heavy leaning toward fusion...The Jeff Beck GroupWeather Report (Jaco's my hero)Peter Gabriel (Tony Levin is another hero)King CrimsonSteely DanThose are probably the strongest influences, with honorable mention to -Frank Zappa and the MothersMahavishnu OrchestraSantanaOf course, the number 1 influence in my life was my father's group, Harry Babasin and the Jazzpickers, but they were strictly jazz. Being raised among musicians of that caliber made it tough for me to take pop music seriously, if you know what I mean. Cheers!

Quote:Is there a better rock song than 'MTV' or 'Money for Nothing' with that great guitar riff?IMO the answer is no, there is not. And for rock ballads it does nay get any better than the song On Every Street from the album of the same name. What about Calling Elvis? Or Walk Of Life? Or Sultans Of Swing? IMO those all are some of the great rock songs ever written. Let's not forget The Bug.

It is not that unusual for the children of great jazz and classical musicians. But often the kid goes the way the father hates. Most great jazz and classical musicians do not have much use for "the mindless music of the masses," as it was referred to by the elitist Segovia.Andres had a son who took up rock guitar. They say it used to drive the old fart crazy. The kid would be upstairs giving a bad imitation of Hendrix and the old man would be downstairs practicing his daily two hours of scales. He did this into his nineties. Then came the other six hours of practice. By that time the kid was bored with bugging the old man and had gone out to find some smoking bud.

Quote:But often the kid goes the way the father hates.True that while my father was an elitist, he was also a great father and cool guy. And while he didn't like the standard I-IV-V progressions in most common rock songs, he appreciated innovation. That's why many of the groups I selected stretched the limits of creativity and played rock that was imaginative and innovative. Here's a funny little memory - my dad played with Woody Herman's Second Herd - he said that some of his favorite charts were written and arranged by Neal Hefti. He was amazed that with all the talent Neal Hefti had, he made a fortune from writing the theme song to the Batman television show. Talk about "the mindless music of the masses".Dad was never so rigid as Segovia but he did have a Master's in composition and could play virtually any instrument.I always wanted to be just like him, though I still chose my own paths musically, which he supported 100%...

Steely Dan is actually making it onto more lists than the Beatles. I love Dan but they will never cause anyone to cry. They do not write emotional music, just not their bag. They do not shoot for the heart IMO, but the intellect. They do not even write legitimate love songs as far as I know. They just did it all with superior music. The Beatles often got to that emotional place. They were a lot more accessible.
