Some of the best songwriters of the 60s wrote for them and, even if they weren't playing many of the instruments, the productions were awesome. If I could write a song like "Daydream Believer" or "Shades of Grey", I'd be thrilled!! And don't forget that Smashmouth had a hit with a remake of "I'm a Believer" (a Neil Diamond composition)... Yeah, a number of the songwriters who had hits with the Monkees were from the Brill Building gang. And then they had Don Kirshner producing early on... What a crew!
