I had a mirrored dual-hard drive system suffer total failure earlier this year (both drives were trashed instantly and simultaneously). Fortunately I always back up to a third source (another computer) as a backup to my backup (mirrored drives). Always backup to something, somewhere that's not permanently attached to your computer.
