Copyright and Permissions: Advice and info needed!
Hi All,Just need some guidance here as per copyrights.....A friend of mine is working on an upcoming project. She is creating a fundraising album in January when they go back to Africa and is going to have all the African children sing a number of songs, several of them are copywritten....So she has asked me to find out what I can an obtain permissions where possible.Do you know how to do this, that is, do we just write each person who owns the copyright and ask if we can use the song and if they say okay, we are good to go?My understanding is that the album will be created and sold as a fundraiser to help raise money for a sheter thewy are building for the children, so I do not know what that means as per does one have to pay royalties or buy a license or what???Any help is greatly appreciated...cheers,Macemanps. I wrote one of the songs for the album, and of course donated it to them for the album. If you want to hear a sample it is here:http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=7057553I know this isn't the spot for songs per se - and i am not seeking any comments on it(unless you really want to )- i just include it for reference to the project. I hope you enjoy it none-the-less....

Some others here are better versed in this, (pun intended) but I think you need to contact the Harry Fox Agency and the writers, who may, at their discretion, decide to donate their royalties-if you can make a strong enough case. Good luck!

If the songs have previously been recorded she doesn't need permission to cover them, but she does have to pay the publisher and songwriter the standard statutory mechanical royalty for every CD sold.I believe it's currently 9.1 cents per song per album sold...to be paid to the publisher and subsequently divided between the publisher(s) and songwriter(s)...
