Re: QUESTION for Matt Vander Boegh
The phrase 'Its who you know' has some validity in the artist side of the music business, but its also an excuse that many offer as the reason they don't achieve what they want. It really doesn't matter who you know in sync, and everyone starts from the same start line. Yes, you need to get your music into good music libraries, but you earn that by providing the content that they want, and you are the only one responsible for doing that.
The exception I would add here is that working with collaborators who already have library connections can help a lot. You will still need to earn those collaborations, so having some skills to offer that could compliment those of others puts you in a good place.
At the moment then, if you compare your returned submissions with the reference tracks and with 100% honesty, do they stack up? Even if you think they do right now, I guarantee that in a year's time (assuming you work hard at this for the next year) you'll think otherwise. It takes time and hard work to get better, and also to appreciate what 'better' is.
To reiterate what's been said already, having the tenacity to keep at it is a valuable asset. Having some musical ability and instinct is a good start but the rest is up to you. Sync seems to attract a huge number of people who think its easy and assume that they can already do it well. A few will be correct, whilst the rest will be frustrated and disappointed until they work out why and how to put it right. As Matt says, we're all a work in progress, but there will be few people on the planet who have worked as hard as he has in order to progress.
A major consideration is what you want to achieve. If you're serious about making a good return it will require serious commitment. How much effort do you want to put into it? Are you willing to do that for several years without much to show for it until the money starts to flow? Some will be more comfortable in repeating 'Its who you know' instead of doing that work. However, if its a just a bit of fun then that's fine, but don't be surprised it things take a lot longer to get moving. Finally, you could be in the lucky position of already having a pile of sync-friendly material, and that might quickly get you a leg up. Whatever your position, I wish you good luck

FOOTNOTE for DOGFART
OK each to their own but I still feel its a crap deal you're peddling, even if it is the only game in town, doing it for shekals or wait for five years deals/plans/withholds or what ever you want to call them, its never worked for me in past and I doubt it will ever motivate me in the future. To me its enjoying whatever it is I create now, and that can be just as challenging otherwise I don't even bother booting up. Time is your only true currency for those who even give a hoot. My thinking is to spend on what ever works for me first. To hell with what works for sync., Everything else has to be secondary, otherwise nothing else will ever happen and that's the last thing I wantcosmicdolphin wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 8:54 amBecause it's a crap tonne of hard work, over a period of years , often for little or nothing in return.

Re: FOOTNOTE for TRASHGATES
I'm not pedalling anything , that's Micheal Laskow's job. I am just shining a light on the reality of it instead of the marketing spinXrashGates wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 10:50 pmOK each to their own but I still feel its a crap deal you're peddling,
Royalties. We call them royalties.XrashGates wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 10:50 pmdoing it for shekals or wait for five years deals/plans/withholds or what ever you want to call them
I can't imagine why it's never worked for you .........XrashGates wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 10:50 pmits never worked for me in past and I doubt it will ever motivate me in the future.

Like I said it takes a lot of work on the frontend before it builds into anything worth having. Most can't hack it.

Good for you. I also enjoy what I create now just as much as I did when I was making my own CD's of slightly subpar songs in the 90s that nobody listened to. I wouldn't do it if I didn't.

Mate, you're in a sync licensing forum complaining about how sync isn't worth it... kinda feels like you've taken a wrong turn. Yes, it's hard work and it can take time to see a return, but that's the game we're in. If you're only in it for instant gratification, maybe sync isn't for you, but some of us are here because we understand the long-term potential. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but complaining about the hustle in a place dedicated to the hustle is a bit... counterproductive."

Wow, —top-tier comeback. But for someone who claims they hate everything I say, you sure are obsessed with quoting me. Kinda feels like you're my biggest fan at this point. It’s okay, admitting it is the first step
